My calls show up as "Unknown Caller" in caller ID

Hello...

My clients see calls from my VZW phone as "Unknown Caller" on their caller
ID. Some of my clients have blocking that prevents my call from going
through because of this. I called VZW and they immediately went into
head-scratch mode, with no solution.

There has got to be some way for VZW to configure my account to have my name
show up on the recipients caller ID. Anyone know of a solution? 73 minutes
and 4 different people at VZW yielded no help.

How long have you had your phone? It takes some time (weeks?) to get
the caller ID info into the database.
Most anonymous call rejection schemes that I am aware of only block the
caller if *no* information is provided, or if the caller intentionally
blocks the info. If the caller's phone number is provided, the call
goes through. Your clients are probably ignoring the call when they
see "unknown caller".

Actually, I get a message saying either "This caller does not accept blocked
calls..." or "This caller does not accept blocked calls, please state your
name at the tone...". I actually never block calls. I've been in my
client's office and called their number to see what shows up: "Unknown
Caller" and my number.

I'm guessing you tried this, but what happens if you dial *82 before the
phone # you're calling?

Good luck.

This is true. My caller ID number from Skype Out is:
000-012-3456
as is every other Skype user on the planet....even to the cops, government
snoops and those damned 800 toll-free thieves, which is really nice.

A friend on Bell$outh has the caller block on his phone. My calls with the
crazy number go through the block and ring his fone just fine.

To my knowledge, VZW caller ID never passes a person's name. Only the
number.

800 numbers? Guess it won't be long before all Skype numbers are blocked on
the 800 lines. And don't for 1 minute believe that the government can't
trace you.

Oh, I'm trembling in my boots, Bob! Do tell how ARE they going to trace
my call back through Luxembourg and the millions of OTHER Skype callers
whos computers were used to route my call to the POTS interconnect point
in, say, Chicago or Seattle or Las Vegas??

Boot Skype and leave it run for an hour. Then, take a TCP/IP program
like TCPView from www.sysinternals.com (free) and run it on the computer,
noting all the OTHER Skype-active computers your computer is connected
to. Hell, my laptop was connected to a Skype user in Belarus and Laos,
yesterday, on its wifi link at Panera Bread store during lunch! Way
cool...(c;

Skype routing is through SKYPE USERS...across the planet. It's a shared
system.

Let's do a test. Do you know someone in the cop department of your local
bureaucracy who traces phone calls? Let's call him from Panera Bread's
free wifi with my laptop and see if he can trace my call, just for a
test.

What's fair? $100? Just to keep it interesting?

I bet the 800 spammers are really pissed. They want me to call because I
want to buy something, maybe something expensive! But, alas, they want
my number so they can sell my info gleaned to some other spammer by the
thousands. Catch 22? If your 800 number blocks my call, I'll buy from
someone else. No problem...(c;

Skype's local phone numbers are gems, themselves. My phone number is in
the 843-564 number block the phone company lists as Hollywood, SC, just
south of Charleston. Looking up the other 564 exchange numbers, they are
all DIALUP MODEMS for a whole bunch of national ISPs who need modems in
Charleston, SC, from a company that specializes in that interconnect.
The company just sold a block to Skype of their 10,000 numbers. What
this means is SKYPE NEVER GETS A COLD SALES CALL! I get calls on my
cellphone from all kinds of places, especially business places calling my
business. I have yet to get a cold sales call, whatsoever, on Skype In
to my private phone number! Way cool...you can eat dinner in peace! The
bots have the whole block locked out!...(c;

Open google and put:
Telephone block 843-564
into the search engine. You'll find the dialup modem numbers of
Minnesota Phone Company to Totalspeed.net for Charleston....

Oops...gotta go. My buddy on Sakhalin Island, Russia, wants me on Skype.
C'ya. Last month I fixed his crazy tube-type Russian TV via Skype Video
from the other side of the planet! Bad disk cap in the horizontal output
stage was arcing, poor high voltage to pix tube. Works great now. I can
see Russian TV on Skype!...hee hee.

Re: My calls show up as "Unknown Caller" in caller ID

What country/city are you in? In the States, Caller ID identifies
Verizon's caller as being the city of the number's exchange.

There is a difference between a blocked call (private call) and an
unknown caller. A "blocked call" is purposely initiated by the CALLER.
An "unknown caller" description is the fault of the CALLED party's
telco. It means that the local telco is not maintaining a cross-lookup
database. True, it's Verizon's choice that your NAME not be identified,
but it's the telco's fault that your CITY is not displayed.

Larry don't tremble.
I'll admit that I don't know all the ins and outs of Skype or how calls or
internet traffic is traced. I think it's one of those deals where they have
to kill you before they tell you.
I have seen a call trace on a moving cell phone. It's very interesting. An
approximate distance from a cell and as the phone moves, the circle of
probability gets smaller and smaller.
So, in short. I'll grant you that I can not prove that Skype is tracable nor
can I show you how cell phones are traced.
I am a little put out by your description of 800 number holders as spammers.
No one forces you to call an 800 number. Since the 800 number owner is
paying for the call, why shouldn't they be allowed to see who is calling?
Finally, Using the "Do not call list" and no blocked call option from
Verizon, I do not get cold calls. Now business are not supposed to cold call
your cell phone but now they are crying that number portability means that
they don't know if it's a cell.
Well I am off to educate myself.
Bob

I got a cold sales call to my Verizon numbered Alltel phone this afternoon.
The number in Caller ID showed 386-615-8312, which is an exchange in
Daytona Beach the caller said was from some "Editor's something-or-other",
of course asking for personal information. Google finds nothing at this
number, of course, and it always answers busy. Switchboard.com has no
listing and there's no such company to find.

Maybe the spambots on Usenet can get through 386-615-8312.....(c;

You might want to consider the possibility that it was a spoofed phone
number which can be done now with Internet telephony, which is a growing
problem.
