Custom Software for VX8500

I have been trying to figure out how to install custom software (apps) for the chocolate. By custom I mean software that comes from my computer and not GetItNow.
I think it is stored as follows (the [app_id] is a template for the program name/id):
The main app and its resources are stored in the /brew/mod/[app_id] folder and the binary file thats executed is a *.mod file. There is also a *.sig file which has some significance apparently. The *.bar file is probably the GUI interface.
The header for the app is in the /brew/mif folder in the [app_id].mif file.
The description of the app is stored in /brew/sys/download/dlc[app_id].cat

For example the V-CAST SongID program is stored as follows:

all the resources are in the /brew/mod/262266 directory

/brew/mod/262266/songid.mod (main binary, I think)
/brew/mod/262266/songid.bar
/brew/mod/262266/songid.sig

/brew/mif/262266.mif

/brew/sys/download/dlc202.cat (the ID is different because there are 3 other descriptions for programs in there)

That is all I have been able to dig up so far...

Then maybe with a BREW SDK people can compile their own programs and upload them like that.

UPDATE
Here is what I found on Google:

Uploading BREW Applications to Handsets
How do I transfer compiled applications to the phone?
Applicable Releases: 1.0, 1.1, 2.0
Use BREW AppLoader to upload applications to the phone. The following example shows files and locations for an application with the name "myapp."

/brew/myapp.mif - Generated by BREW MIF Editor
/brew/myapp/myapp.bar - Generated by BREW Resource Editor
/brew/myapp/myapp.mod - Compiled and linked with ARM Developer Suite
/brew/myapp/myapp.sig - Digital Signature

All directory and file names on the phone must be in lower case. Any additional files specific to your application may also be copied to the application directory, or subdirectories of the application directory.

The Digital Signature file is generated using the BREW TestSig Generator then renamed with the name of the application. The name of the .sig filename must be the same as the name of the .mod filename. The application directory name should be same as name of the MIF file.

In order to use a test-signature file on your handset, your handset must be test-enabled. This is done as a security measure. If a test signature is loaded on a handset that is not test-enabled, BREW will remove the application from the handset. To get your handset test-enabled, please send it to the QIS Phone Center. For more information, please refer to Where should I send my phone when it needs to be re-flashed, or have DNS configured or test-bit enabled?.

After uploading files, reset the phone.

See How to Build a Downloadable BREW Application for more details.

b. How do I upload the device configurator (.qsc) file to the phone?
Applicable Releases: 1.0, 1.1, 2.0
The device configurator file (.qsc) is used by the BREW Emulator application, and is not required to run applications on the phone.

Re: Custom Software for VX8500

The SDK is free but to be able to get the main tools for uploading apps to the phone I would have to pay QUALCOMM $400 or so. Maybe I can create a dummy *.sig file somewhow then my apps would work.

Then the *.sig file would not be enough. I also need the MIF editor which is avaliable if I pay QUALCOMM.

No free software I guess...

Re: Custom Software for VX8500

Does anyone know if I can install Linux on this phone?
I just don't see a point in buying apps for a 2 inch screen.
