Unless we're talking about two different hacks, the only other network
that can be used is T-Mobile. Not much of a choice.

Hey, I have a T-Mobile contract!:-)

Not that it makes any difference to me since I have no intention
of spending any money on a phone and I seriously doubt that T-Mobile
will be offering iPhones as free upgrades to customers.

In the USA, anyway. If SIM cards can be switched, that opens the phone
up for use in Europe or other places, with or without an official Apple
deal there. It'd be a gray-market import in Europe but would probably
work.

That's for GSM anyway, I have no idea whether EDGE is available
elsewhere.

So what? Almost _no_ higher-end phones are EVER offered as "free
upgrades!"

Depends what you mean by higher-end, they offer some pretty
impressive phones as free upgrades to loyal customers - and
if you go into one of their shops you can sometimes talk the
sales dude into giving you something higer-end than what
they initially say you can have (all it takes is mentioning
that you might look around for another network that will
give you something better).

But I agree, even an accomplished blagger is unlikely to end
up with anything that is a serious competitor to an iPhone
(Apple would probably say that there are no serious competitors).

And I think you missed the joke. Of course they won't offer an
iPhone as an upgrade (let alone a free one) because:

1) It doesn't *officially* work with T-Mobile
2) It would annoy Apple, with whom they may want a future parnership
3) In the absense of such a partnership Apple won't supply them

I don't think it was a joke -- it was a mischaracterization intended to
criticize iPhone for not being offered as only the most basic phones
are offered.

We get it -- lots of people are annoyed that iPhone isn't playing the
game exactly as every other company has been playing it.
Deal with it.
iPhone does a couple things differently. If you like them, buy one. If
you don't, then don't buy one. It's really that simple.
There is just no reason to attack and criticize this phone.

Did you look at the attributions? I know it was a joke
because it was me who said! It was certainly not intended
to be a criticism of the iPhone - I have said before that
the development of a small device running OS X is a great
move for Apple and that it is probably an excellent product.
Just one that I don't happen to need or want.
