P990i - insert sim error

Hi I would really appreciate any help on the following problem i have
with my P990

THE LEAD-UP
After sending a few sms's and not receiving any response I checked my
messages & found them hung up in the Outbox

I attempted to send from there by ticking them but they just remained
& the system froze.

ACTION TAKEN
I had no option but to reboot & discovered that in fact only when I
removed the battery as well did the screen shut down as no matter how
many times I attempted to shut down it was well & truly frozen.

PROBLEM
Upon reinstallation of the battery and reboot the phone briefly went
into system recognition - before flicking once or twice & then
shiftingg into error - namely - "Insert SIM card"

IN CLOSING
I have removed the card - inserted another - placed a small spacer to
ensure connection - cleaned the contacts BUT no matter what - "Insert
SIM card" still shows I'm using that very same sim in my P910 with no
problem

Any ideas??
