Seems apple could make the iPod touch & iPhone more affordable by
simply adding an sd slot, allowing the user to upgrade storage according
to his or her needs?

Yes, but over their dead body. If they had some kind of standard memory
card slot, the gift that keeps on giving would only pay them ONCE, not
often.....
