#1 | | Junior Member | I was wondering if it will benefit me to use the Sony Ericsson Update Service. I was wondering if anyone with a W580i has used the Update and what difference it made.
I just got my phone a few days ago and how do I know if it is up to date?? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thx.

#2 | | | I don't have a W580i, but universally speaking, the update service will often fix up certain glitches with the phone, raise or lower the speaker volume, adjust camera quality, adjust call quality, change menus, adjust the 'quickness' of being able to browse the phone and a lot more. The only downside would be that sometimes these features are changed against public will (sometimes the volume is lowered in some models for some bizzare reason). The update service has been known to corrupt peoples phones too. This however is very rare, and is often at fault of the user not following the on-screen instructions correctly. I don't quite know what the current Sony Ericsson Firmware version is, but you can find this out by going through the update process, as it will alert you if you already have the latest firmware on your phone. Happy updating .

#3 | | Junior Member | Well I tried it and it said that my firmware is up to date. But I also looked in Setool and XS++ and it says that I have CID52 and other forums and such say there is a CID53 for a W580i. Any clues???

#4 | | | There probably is a CID53 for the W580i, but whether your phone is subject for the upgrade probably depends entirely on what branding you have on your phone. I updated my K800i to CID53 yesterday, and I'm pretty frustrated because I found that I am now unable to mod my phone anymore due to the new restrictions put in place, so if you're a phone modder, stay well clear of CID53 - it's one of Sony's death traps. If you do not intend to mod your phone however, a CID53 upgrade would do no harm I suppose. I know you're saying that your phone does not seem to want to upgrade to CID53, but to be honest, you're not missing out on much. I have noticed no difference whatsoever in terms of performance from the phone (except my lovely modded icons have been removed ).

#5 | | Junior Member | Well to be honest I am such a computer geek, so I am really into modding my phone, but this is somewhat a new field to me. I flashed a Motorola T-720 before and did it successfully, but I don't want to screw up my 580i by doing something wrong.
Hell, I don't even have insurance on my phone so why don't I flash it??? I don't feel comfortable yet flashing it. maybe if I had a step by step guide, I seen lots of them but some of them are confusing at times. But as I said before the geek in me wants to flash it.

#8 | | | Ok, well the menus and camera are fairly simple to do.
Starting with the camera, yes the quality can be adjusted to quite an extent (more colourful pictures, sharpness, focus etc). The video can be adjusted too - I'm not sure about the W580i, but my K800i has had its framerate increased from 10 FPS (laggy movement), to 35 FPS (around camcorder standard - just not as detailed). For this you'd need the 35 FPS camera mod. I'm not sure if it's compatible with the W580i, but there's no harm in trying, as you can after all just re-apply the original if it didn't work. The zoom could in theory be enabled too I suppose...
As for the Menus, you can go wild to your hearts desire here really. There are a lot of designs (I for one am using the iPhone menu look-a-like). You can get performance ones, animated ones, optimised ones, flashy ones, themed ones - anything really.
If you let me know what sort of menu and camera prefferences you want, list them here and I'll search up some links for you. You can do FAR more than what I've mentioned so far as well - change the media player skin, battery and signal icons, audio drivers (MUCH better sound), keypad lights, startup & shutdown screen, shortcut keys, radio with no headset required, video recording format, startup and shutdown sounds, remove messages (such as the annoying '95% full' text alert), volume of the phone, vibrate for when someone calls you, absolutely anything you can think of really .
Just let me know what sort of things you want done and I'll do my best to help. Some things are trickier to do than others, and I have failed at a majority, but like I said, I'll do my best .

#11 | | | Ok, firstly, just be careful if you attempt this, as I cannot be held responsible for any damage or corruption caused to your phone. You are doing this at your own sole risk. I have experience with modding phones and it is probably a lot easier for me to write up than it is for you to understand. If you have a concern or are confused about something, do NOT proceed with the operation. Just take it slow and research the appropriate method for applying each item. Ask here for help if necessary, and I'll do my best.
The basic tools you're gonna need to flash your phone are:
1) Your phone (nah...)
2) A computer running a recent version of XS++
3) The data cable that came with your phone
It's probably not a good idea to start off with the patching, as that can get a little confusing, but it's fine to start off with a simple camera mod. Speaking loosely, you're gonna need to find a camera driver for your phone that you like the look of (just google them, they're easy enough to find). If you don't like one don't worry, just download another and keep re-flashing until you find one you like. You then need to connect your phone to XS++, navigate to 'FSX', and then flash the camera driver to IFS/SETTINGS/CAMERA
Then just re-insert the battery, boot the phone, go to the camera option, and you should find yourself using the new drivers. Simple .
The same method applies to the audio drivers - just find the ones you want to use, go to FSX, and then apply them to IFS/SETTINGS/ACOUSTIC
Start your phone and enjoy . I won't name all the directories, as that'll take ages, but those are a couple of basic ones. If you find someting you want to change, just get the driver / patch you need, and google the location it needs to be set. Have fun .

#12 | | Newbie | Hi, I think you can put your original s.w. version into your phone as long as you have the file prior to updating. In that way, you can always do the modding as you want. Remember that even dead phones that we think has a hardware problem happens to have a software problem in many cases. Thanks Quote:

Thanks | I think I get what you're saying - you want me to re-flash the CID52 firmware into the phone again, right? If so, that wouldn't work. Sony Ericsson have placed some form of an encryption on this patch, so that downgrading to CID52 is impossible. For now there is NO way to mod your phone except for a plugin called 'JDflasher'. I'd need to learn its interface to be able to use it though, so for now, no modding for me . For now, people in my position have to just sit tight and wait for the hackers to wrap up the patch.
