We have been told by our Verizon National Account rep that
Verizon will launch a combo
GSM /
CDMA phone by end of year, it's
likely to be a Sony Ericcson. So far as the
GSM dide is concerned
it will be Euro
GSM only.
The launch (but not the brand) has been confirmed by a couple of
executive suite folks.
Apparently it wasn't even on their radar scope back in January
but Ivan Seidenberg (CEO Verizon) passed the word to Charles Hand
(CEO Verizon Wireless) that he was continually being beaten up by
other Fortune 500 folks as to why their Verizon phones wouldn't
work overseas.
We saw a prototype Motorola combo
GSM /
CDMA unit (v60 form
factor)operating in Washington DC last fall on the small Euro
GSM
network run for foreign diplomats but evidently nothing came of
it.
Unfortunately the immediate international operability plans are
for voice only. There is no word of a combo 1X/
GPRS Blackberry
yet although they are hopeful about the second half of 2004.
Currently even the Verizon senior execs going overseas can't take
their Blackberrys with them.
