Changing plans

I called 611 today to ask about changing my calling plan.

I'm currently on the Western States Single Rate Plan. I get 500 anytime
minutes and 3000 night and weekend minutes for $55 a month. Evening
rates start at 8 PM and end at 6 AM. There are no roaming charges
anywhere in the 12 western states (including Alaska and Hawaii). There
are no free in-network minutes, though.

I was thinking about the America's Choice plan; 800 anytime minutes and
unlimited night and weekend minutes for $59.99, plus unlimited free in
network minutes (if I am in my home calling area), but night rates start
at 9 PM. One of the disadvantages of this plan is that there are
areas--even within my home state--where there are roaming charges.

The CSR discussed the differences in plans with me in great detail, and
made sure that I understood the differences between the plans, and what
I would be gaining and what I would be losing--including the tradeoffs
between switching immediately and waiting until the first day of the new
billing cycle.

Then she floored me with one other item; after changing plans, I have 30
days to switch back to my current plan with no penalty, even though my
current plan is no longer offered!

One of the reasons I was considering the change is that I will be
visiting friends and relatives on the east coast next month, and my
current plan will mean that I'd be charged roaming for all calls while
I'm there.

So, I now have the option of changing plans for the trip and changing
back again after I return home.

I was very impressed with the way she covered all aspects of the change.

I'm way behind in reading this group and just got to this post.

I would be concerned about the possibility that "switching back to your
current plan with no penalty" will be done in such a way as to make it as
though you had never switched at all and you will thus be charged roaming
for your trip to Florida. I think you should ask the CSR that before you
commit to this change (if it's not too late).
