In college, the first real operating system I got to use was Unix (before Unix, I used both BASIC and FORTRAN). This was in the mid to late 70's and they had just rewritten the kernel in that funky (according to some of my college friends) thing called the C programming language. That made the program portable (easily ported or moved to any hardware.

My first taste of a IBM compatible/Microsoft operating system was DOS 3.1 (by the way, I currently own every version of DOS, and 95% of them are on the original disks too).

I played with Windows 3.1 beta when it first came out, but couldn't get used to using a mouse. As such, it was long time before I went over to the dark side and lost my title of "Power User".

I have used and own every version of Windows since 3.1.

I have also used a lot of versions of Unix/Linux.

Other operating systems I used/played with are:

BPS/360
CHIPPEWA
EXEC 8
George 4
Master Control Program
OS/PCP
RCA DOS.
BKY
DOS/VS
BeOS
BSDi
FreeBSD
NeXT
OS/2

I have become lazy in these last 15 years, and haven't looked into/played with an operating system of any type. (nor do I really want to anymore either. All the old excitement is gone)

My currently system is a dual boot system running Windows XP Pro and Linux Red Hat (Red Hat being used 80% of the time).

I was right behind you using DOS on an IBM 8088.

(20 MB HD, 16 MB RAM, CGA Graphics)

If I wanted anything 'fancy' I had to write my own batch files. I got really good at that. Back in the day I remember plugging away at DOS and seeing previews for Windows 3.1 thinking it was a huge revelatioin.
