Battery life on 3G

I have a SE Z800i. I was using a standard Telstra sim in it, but have
recently changed to a Telstra 3 sim. The battery life seems to have halved.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Could be. Its certainly normal to get less time using the same handset
on 3G.

Could be it has to work harder to reach the 3g cell. All phones vary
power up and down. There aren't that many 3g cells around at the
moment.

W-CDMA requires significantly more signal processing capability from the
processor so it needs to use up more power than regular GSM. As more
3GSM handsets are sold the chipsets will become more refined and energy
efficient.

Interestingly the radiation levels are lower, according to an ACMA
publiclication.

I still stand behind fewer cells, more power needed from the handset.

In 2003, Three had around 2000 base stations covering only the inner
areas of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane/GC, Adelaide and Perth.

Even today, the network still doesn't reach even Werribee in Melbourne
and only just began reaching Campbelltown in Sydney.

That's incredible base station density compared to GSM. Optus has
around 4000 base stations that cover 94% of the population!

nope - as KB said, much more processing power is needed for the WCDMA
encoding. The radiated power levels are generally less than GSM with
CDMA type tehnologies.

Just the answer I wanted. Means that the phone is doing what it should.
Maybe we need higher capacity batteries ...
