    So could I buy one in the UK, stick in my Orange O2 PAYG SIM card and it
    would be good to go as a mobile phone and pricey male jewelry combo?

    No. It's subsidy locked to AT&T wireless.

    That terminates your contract early. AT&T, to the best of my knowledge,
    has no obligation to unlock your phone at that time.

    People always figure out how to unlock phones anyway, though.

    Yeah, how many hours will it take? :-D

    How many hours did it take before the AppleTv was hacked? Ok, maybe
    not the same thing, but still. These things get cracked *fast*.

    It depends on how much effort was put into the locking scheme. Not
    everything gets cracked. AFAIK, DirecTV is not cracked (DISH is
    cracked). Some phones cannot be unlocked.
