Sounds like a disappointing experience looking for someone to
disappoint.

Yeah right. What part of this would be disapointing?

"U.S. Patent Application #20070291710 describes a device that also
would keep tabs on where a user shops and what he or she likes to buy.
Computers at participating stores would keep track of regular
customers and their favorite orders.

Customers might tap a button to order their favorite drink, say a
double-shot mocha, as they stroll up to the nearest coffee shop. When
the drink is ready go to, the device--such as an iPhone--would chime
or blink to let the thirsty one know it's time to scoop up the order
at the counter.

The patent puts Apple's partnership with Starbucks in a new light. The
technology promises to morph Apple from the business of simply selling
gadgets and music and movies that can be played on those devices into
an intermediary in all kinds of exchanges. "

Point from CNet blog comments where someone said you could do
something like quick ordering from a WinMo phone using Text
Messaging

by OlsonBW December 28, 2007 7:34 PM

Apple has it EXACTLY right. It's you backwards thinking people that
have it wrong with text messaging to do this.

Sure you can do this using text messaging, AFTER you figure out what
user-id to send it to and then have to type out the whole bloody
thing.

OR you can do it the Apple way.

In Apple's way you'll be able to tap on the companies' link which will
automatically appear when you walk into the store, then see a list of
what you can buy, click on it, and then choose more options about what
you want to buy (like your own special blend, etc. at StarBucks or I
would like that sweatshirt in blue, size large) and then click on Buy.

All this can be done with Apple way with a few taps on the screen as
compared to LOTS of taps text messaging and maybe/probably misspelling
things and getting the wrong thing.

Apple way. Smart and Easy.

Text messaging way. Lots of tapping and a lot bigger change of getting
messed up.

PS: The next time you are in Starbucks, look for someone with an
iPhone (unsurprisingly you can often find someone with an iPhone in
there) and have them show you how easy it is to see "what's playing"
currently and how easy it would be buy the current or one or more of
the last 10 played songs.

Then try to do anything like that with your Windows smart phone. You
can't do it or it's a pain in the ***? How surprising. Not.

True, but not because of any special technology involved, but because of an
agreement between the companies and additional equipment installed at
Starbucks to make it happen.

Starbucks could just as easily provide the same info via a local intranet
webpage on their WiFi so anyone who goes to www.whatsplayingnow.com, (or
whatever) on their AP sees the same info.

It's a cool concept, but locking it in to one device or even platform makes
it a silly gimmick instead of a useful tool for either party (Apple or
Starbucks.)

When stuck in a long line at a restaurant, I've simply called the
restaurant from the back of the line on my cell and ordered take-out,
(that's as low tech as it gets!) and generally it's ready before I get to
the front of the line. So special phone or applications needed.

(I even faxed a lunch order into a Chipotle restaurant from the back of the
line with my WinMo phone, but it was akward and more of a "proof of
concept"- I wanted to test the speed of my e-mail-to-fax service.)

(Things we geeks will do to amuse ourselves!)

If you have no concept why it would be disappointing, then any
explanation would be beyond your grasp.
