America's largest telephony operator, AT&T, has announced its results
for the first quarter of 2008, which not only show how the company is
becoming more reliant on wireless, but how the American public is too.

The company made profits of $3.5bn in the first three months of 2008,
compared to the paltry $2.85bn in the same period last year, but it's
wireless which is driving that growth with the market for traditional
voice calls contracting.

But it was in wireless where the company really shone, with wireless
revenue up 18.3 per cent to $2.3bn coming from 71.4 million subscribers:
a net increase of 1.3 million in the last 3 months.

Churn remains at only 1.7 per cent, a figure for which most European
operators would give their right arm, and AT&T is now making 21.5 per
cent of their wireless income from data - up from 16 per cent last year
and very comparable to what's being achieved on this side of the pond.

That data figure includes text messaging: 44 billion texts and 620
million multimedia messages were sent in the first three months of 2008,
doubling last year's totals as Americans come to love texting, almost as
much as they apparently love AT&T.
