That's the ATT Network Center. It has nothing to do with SELLphone
networks, a tiny company called ATT Wireless that ATT, Inc. bought back
from Cingular for peanuts. ATT Network Center controls a major portion of
the data network you're reading this message from. It passes more data in
a microsecond than all the data ever transmitted by ATT/Cingular Wireless
since the first tower was erected, not long ago.

Your perception of the tiny, and separate, sellphone carrier with the
company's moniker on it is very warped, like looking through a huge
magnifying glass. To compare the two companies, ATT is the sun, ATT
Wireless is the Earth:

As you can see, ATT Wireless is a quite insignificant part of the company
whole.

If ATTWS went belly up, ATT execs might skip lunch.

Here are AT&T's segment revenue numbers for the first three months
of 2008 (in millions of $):

Wireless Wireline Publishing Other
11,825 17,624 1,417 544

More important, here is the income:

Wireless Wireline Publishing Other
2,898 2,833 418 15

So wireless service provides 37% of AT&T's total revenue and 47% of
their profit. I think they'd notice if it went belly up.

Everything they do is rolled into those four categories, that's the
entire line from their CY first quarter 10-Q. If it isn't in the
10-Q AT&T didn't do it. It definitely isn't just consumer business
since they further break some of the categories out into consumer,
business and wholesale in other spots in the 10-Q.

It is worse for Verizon, actually. The wireless business is half
of their revenue, and well under half of their assets, but is about
3/4 of their income. It is a majority of Verizon's income even if
you take out the 40% or so which belongs to Vodafone.

Larry- AT&T the juggernaut you're referring to is gone. Southwestern Bell
Bought the name and shell company of what was left and adopted the name
because everyone recognizes it.

And they didn't buy Cingular- they WERE Cingular (or actually 60% of it.
BellSouth owned the other 40% of Cingular and SBC bought BellSouth after
buying AT&T.)

Your perception of wireless' insignificance in the modern era is warped.
It's the leading revenue source for phone companies in this day and age.
