It what Captain Smith said before he sunk.

Actually it was one of the two things he said...

The other was "Where the F all this water come from?"

I find it ironic that you bash the iPhone for requiring "webapp"
connectivity for many functions, yet you use remote desktop on your tablet
to use Usenet, email, etc. to avoid managing multiple databases. Remote
desktop is a "webapp"- you're just being your own server...

The concept of syncing is a sound one. It lets you store important data on
several devices without worring about updating them manually, or wondering
what device is the most up to date.

With OTA syncing (Exchange, SyncML, etc.) you don't even need to worry
about actually doing it- whenever your connected to the net, you're syncing.

Forgetting the paranoia for the moment, your scheme falls apart when/if you
lose web connectivity at either end. At least with syncing, you always
have information with you, updated until the point you lost connectivity.

No- the key for me is ubiquitous access to necessary data whether I'm
    "connected" or not.

And I always thought it was something my grandfather did with his mind. Like
when we were playing chess: "Grandpa, it's your turn to move". "Vait a
    minute. I'm syncing."

But syncing what? Run-Bunny-Run? Which SQL database is stored in the
iPhone? Come on....it's a TOY, not a PDA. It doesn't do PDA things. I
guess we can "sync" the phone list and music. We could have carried
that on a MEMORY CARD, no syncing necessary. How many 16GB SDHC cards
can I fit in my business card holder? There's already 6 in there,
now....and it's got room for business cards.

Iphone is more dependent on web apps than any device I know to actually
DO anything but some video games and iPod. No storage, no ports, no
memory. No paranoia is necessary....it simply doesn't DO.

I don't depend on ANY web connectivity for anything important. About 8
layers of Virtual Earth tiles, every conceivable map tile even the
aviation and marine charts are on the internal card, always available.
I use that a LOT because my customers are all over about 7 counties.
The map book companies are disappointed I don't buy them any more. What
does the church property look like so I can identify it? Just look down
from space. There it is. There's a big oak tree out front and the
parking is on the right side. Iphone can't even find itself on the
road. My accuracy is the size of half a parking space on the real
    picture of that lot.

I keep all my business databases on one 16GB card, now. Customer list
of every instrument I've worked on since 1986 (name/brand/model/s-
    n/owner/address/last 4 visit data/credit?/slow pay?/still owes me/) No
printer necessary to use it any more. Bethany Baptist always has broken
keytops, the power supply failed twice from lightning hits. It's all
there on the tiny card for hundreds of customers. The only "syncing" I
do is to overwrite the database archive with the current database about
twice a week, if it's busy, once if it's not, to the PC hard drive.

Too bad Quickbooks doesn't have a Maemo Linux version, now that I have
host mode in USB with a real keyboard and printer port. I still do that
    on the PC....(c;

BTW, broadband just got a LOT faster on the N800. Those silly Canadian
hardware guys who sold me the hardware USB OTG plugs sent me the
Ethernet card to plug into it! I no longer use wifi on the tablet at
the house, but a direct Ethernet port....amazingly faster! With
wifi/bluetooth OFF, the tablet recovered a LOT of its CPU cycles using
data pouring in at 100Mbps direct from my router. The whole machine
    runs faster from less loading!
