Just backed up all memory and cards in the N800 by burning my first CDR
with it on a Lite-On DVD/CD burner. DVD's work, too!

So now you have a 5"x3" tablet surrounded by a USB hub, a portable hard
disk, an external DVD burner, full-sized BT keyboard, and BT GPS. You're
turning your web tablet into a web TABLE!

When it takes a laptop carrying case to drag around your tablet, shouldn't
you just use a laptop at that point? ;-) (But, admittedly, I am impressed
by the device's capabilities. Hook an external monitor to it, and you've
got the world's smallest desktop PC!)

Ah, but you WRONGLY assume I carry it around WITH me, which I don't.
But, with this addition it's the upload/download king for sure. I only
carry the 32GB twin 16GB cards with me. The rest stays on the
desktop...two plugs, charger and USB mini adapter and we're rarin' ta
go! Move the files on and off the tablet's various storage devices
while the battery recharges and two unplugs and off you go to someplace
else with the tablet in the little case with GPS and a "few small
plugs" so you can use it someplace else. No hobbling, no BS, no carrier
    nonsense.....

I keep stumbling onto what these guys are doing like this. I'm still
hounding HP for a driver for my all-in-one desktop
    printer/copier/fax/scanner......(c;

Ahem. Not so fast, fanboy. The iPhone is a wonderful device with many
great features, but a "computer" it ain't.

What external peripherals connect to THAT "world's smallest computer?" It
can't hook up to other devices (except earpieces) via bluetooth. It lacks
USB host capability, so mass storage devices, external HID devices
(keyboard, mouse), etc. are out. It lacks native file manipulation
capability- media must be sideloaded from a PC, or purchased via iTunes, and
other file types (non-media) can't be stored by the native OS at all. Email
attachments can't be saved. To be a "computer" it can't be dependant on
other computers to load information onto it.

The iPhone is a complete eunich without attachment to another PC, or to
"cloud" based file storage, unless jailbroken. Frankly, Larry's tablet is
misnamed- he has a tiny computer- the iPhone is truly the "webtablet" since
it doesn't work without the web.

You'll eventually figure this out if/when you ever buy an iPhone, Ron...

I actually assumed that you didn't. I was just having fun with the image.
It would be a nice "toolkit" (sans the DVD drive perhaps) for traveling
however, and would still tip the scales at less than the typical laptop.

Mark, which OS are you running, Diablo?

Go to maemo.org and dl mcalendar, which seamlessly interfaces with Google
Calendar. I just got it and set it up. No sync is necessary as it does
that itself. I'm having good success with my appointments with it now.
    Very nicely done.

Media player......mplayer, not Nokia's little media player. I'm currently
liking KMplayer as the interface with it as well as YouAmp. YouAmp is
really nice for MP3 playing, uses little resources so it doesn't disturb
other things you're doing. KMplayer for video because you can install
World99TV, a specialized television playlist for KMplayer that updates
itself because it's installed as an app so applications manager
automatically keeps your TV playlist current. I'm watching MadTV from
Russia on it over wifi right now, a sort of MTV without the spam from
Moscow. Most of the music is American/European...a little more upbeat than
all the cryin' and wailin' America plays these days....misery and mayhem.

Check 'em out....There's also a new video in the NEWS blog on maemo.org
from Nokia's Maemo head about yet the NEXT generation of OS upgrade.
Diablo is going to be replaced by another name.....well, it'll replace
itself. There was a major Diablo update in App Manager's update just
today. Makes the browser run better and some other stuff I've forgotten.

iToy has a media player....fine.....What it DOESN'T have are CODECS for
"normal" streaming and videos.... making even the slickest player DEAD!

Does Air have a dual purpose USB port or Firewire??

I didn't see any removeable standard memory to transport files on Air,
    either....

The tablets were never intended to be Palm Pilots. However, with the
addition of the Garnet Virtual Machine giving us full Palm OS emulation,
and the Palm OS HotSync to any Palm Desktop you already have running, the
tablet becomes a fully functional PDA, for free so far.
    http://www.access-company.com/products/gvm/

I keep my calendar and contacts on Google's reliable servers, myself, and
    use mcalendar from:
    http://khertan.net/mcalendar.php
on the tablet's native Maemo OS2008 Diablo Linux. It syncs over the net
from any connection automatically and does a really neat job of keeping me
from forgetting where I'm supposed to be and what I'm supposed to do,
without having to use the Google webpage access which, like any web app,
wastes time loading all that crapware. mcalendar raises hell as the
appointment approaches to wake me up from my stupor...self-induced or
    otherwise.

The included programs from Nokia are trash in comparison to either of
these. Palm Desktop and HotSync work better over wifi than even a USB
cable, but we're free to use either....
