Google's phone beat the iPhone in speed. Saw this on some tech show today.
Same website on both phones. Google beat them by 9 sec's. So much for AT&T
saying there 3G speed is the fastest network.

    ???

Google isn't a "network." We're talking about a phone that can be used
on various networks. So which network are we talking about? Besides, is
it the network that was faster, or did the Google phone render the pages
    internally faster?

Let's make a fair test. Do a speedtest on:

    http://speedtest.knology.net

    What speeds do you get?

    Let's do a fair speedtest:

    http://speedtest.knology.net/

What speeds do you get? Alltel EVDO is showing 980Kbps down and 80Kbps up
    at 1749EDT on 11/1/08.

This is about normal for the weekend, sometimes a little over 1Kbps.

What speeds do ATT and TMO get to this nearly unused speed tester....

That seems to be a flash-based test- I wonder how many phones can run the
test without tethering to a flash capable PC. My AT&T Tilt ran it, and
crashed just after completing the test (WinMo's Internet Explorer Mobile can
handle Flash up to v7 with a now-abandoned Macromedia plug-in.) On
T-Mobile's EDGE I got 201k down and 57k up for what it's worth...

It was T-Mobil network vs. AT&T with the two phones on there own network.

Cant do any speed test as I don't own one.

Just telling of what I saw. The Google phone on it's network and the iPhone
on it's network. Both were tested from the studio in San Francisco ca.

Android G1 runs it without crashing, as do all the Nokia Linux
    tablets....

    ================================================================

Todd, you'll appreciate the irony of my finding the Asus EE PC700 little
Linux laptop at Best Buy, here in town, for $299, this week. It was WAY
too close to the Apple Kiosk to be ignored as the curious geeks and
customers watched my testing it to see if I wanted to buy it.

I had three 16GB SDHC Class 6 cards loaded with various forms of movies,
music, ebooks, PDF files, Windows wmv, wma, realvideo, realaudio, stuff
I had downloaded from Usenet's binary groups.

I'm happy to report the little Asus' media player played everything but
OGG and FLAC I had on the cards just fine. There are OGG and FLAC
codecs for free that will run on it. DivX movies straight off
alt.binaries.movies.divx in really fast bit rates were very smooth in
great stereo that really impressed the assemblage, especially the store
people who had never seen the little Linux laptop run anything before.

We made way too much noise and attracted the Apple guys from next door
who opened their mouths at the wrong time only to get a big SD card put
in their hands the overpriced stuff refused to play. The fun value went
up when the apologists started making lame excuses.

I think what Best Buy is selling for $299 is an obsolete model, now.
But, it's the first time I've seen any Linux boxes at Best Buy. They
had the Asus EE in Windows dress with hard drives before and got a new
model I hadn't seen before for around $390 with the Micro$oft tax added
    onto it.

Boots in 20 seconds. Nice little machine but seems to lack that
maemo.org kind of community support the Linux tablets have established,
    sponsored by Nokia.

Unless the two phones are being compared on the same network at the
same time and place I don't think the test tells much.

I picked up the iPhone a couple of weeks ago and it seems pretty snappy
when it is on 3G. Glad I did not get the initial iPhone. I don't think
I could have put up with Edge speeds. I am getting 3G in most places
that I use it. The Google phone is on T-Mobile and 3G is still limited.
I went to take a look and they did not have it because 3G is not
    launched here yet.

I have to say the iPhone is a great gadget. Should have bought it a
couple of months ago. I am very happy with it so far.

    Cool.

    > Todd, you'll appreciate the irony of my finding the Asus EE PC700 little

Target just started selling an "exclusive" version for $299- it's a
900-series (bigger screen than the 700 series) but with the 700's 4GB SSD
instead of the usual 12-20GB drive in the typical 900.

    > I think what Best Buy is selling for $299 is an obsolete model, now.

One man's obsolete is another's "good deal." I'd take the larger screen for
$299 if I had it to do over again (there was no 900 series when I purchased
    it.)

It doesn't really need a "community" like the Nokia, since there is already
a ton of Linux stuff for PCs out there- the maemo guys are making Linux work
on the N8x0's "non-standard" architecture. The Asus is a straight
PC-compatible device and can use any Linux flavor out there for any PC.

However, there is an active hacking community dedicated to getting the most
out of the device's hardware. Check out http://forum.eeeuser.com/ for a
taste. It supports Linux and Windows users.
