No, that means you have to know something about two possible states for
your USB ports before you can know where to charge it more efficiently:
You need to know whether they are high-power USB ports or not.

'nospam' is also pointing out that people have had to check this for
many other USB devices, as well; it's not a new factor in using USB.

It's too bad they didn't ship it with one of those dual head USB plugs
that come with some drives. You can get more power for the device that way.
It's a pretty simple work around really. You would have thought it would
    have occured to Apple.

Apple likes to add 1 feature a month and resell the same product to
the Mactards dozens of times. They are brainwashed cultists so it's
    not that hard.

two won't provide enough power, plus it's a total hack.

Given that the iPad can apparently run from USB power *or* slow-charge
from USB power, but not both together, it stands to reason that it could
do both if it had access to both.

However, it wouldn't just take a hacky USB cable, the iPad would have to
mount as a device on both ports to request to run at high power mode, so
this would dramatically increase engineering costs for relatively
    minimal gain.

Firewire might be better since there's a little more power available,
but again, a lot of engineering for relatively minimal gain, especially
when you can just tell your audience to take a power adapter with them.

What I'd really like to see is an iPad power adapter with multiple USB
ports, so that I can charge my iPad, iPhone and BT headset all off the
same adapter. I can get multiple-USB walwarts in the market already,
but nothing that will power the iPad properly.

    true.

ironically, apple removed firewire entirely just 2 years ago. it would
have been very nice for ipad charging.

i'm sure there will be ipad capable power adapters soon enough.

$20, 10 USB ports, full speed hub, 500ma per port for charging, $20

Even works off a 5V car power supply in the mobile....not included.
    AC power supply is included.

Oh, wait....There's no USB port on iPad to plug into it....damn!
    Never mind......

so what's the usb cable that comes in the box for, which will plug
    right into that hub?

Apple. The iPad has a Dock Connector port which has USB pinouts, but no
    USB port.

Per the specs, the link you quoted supplies "up to 500mA per port"
whereas the iPad comes with a 2A power adapter.

The iPad will charge off of that item, but only in slow-charge mode and
only if the iPad is in standby at the time.

sure, but there isn't much need for a usb port with everything on apple
products being wireless... usb is a legacy port, like scsi don't forget.

iTunes syncs wirelessly over WiFi, that was added in version 9, yes, it
hasn't been rolled down to the small devices because of slow wifi speed
    (802.11g) & battery concerns, but it's there.
