Is there a newsgroup for Android on AT&T? Or a more less-specific
Android newsgroup?
The reason I ask:
I am an AT&T customer, with an iPhone 3G. I'm eligible for a phone
upgrade on AT&T. Also, my contract is about to expire, so I'm free to
jump to another network without penalty.
But, I have a financial incentive to remain on AT&T. I have an old
voice plan, $15/month for 100 minutes. Not a lot of minutes, but it's
all I need. I also have a 15% corporate discount. So for 100 minutes
and unlimited data, I pay less than $45/month ($44.04 after all the
miscellaneous BS charges).
So if I stick with AT&T, I need to decide whether to stick with Apple
and upgrade to the iPhone 4, or switch to the Android platform, which I
think means Samsung Captivate.
If I didn't already have 2 years of iPhone experience, apps, etc, I'd
probably choose Android, because I like the open concept better than
having Apple tell me what I can install on my phone. But now I have to
weigh that against starting over.
Also, I think I read somewhere that AT&T has locked down the Captivate
to prevent it from installing anything from outside the Android
marketplace. If that's true, it might not be much better than Apple's
walled garden.
I already read the misc.phone.mobile.iphone newsgroup, and I just found
this one. Is there anywhere else I should look to find a bunch of
Android users, preferably on the AT&T network, talking about what they
like and don't like?
(Another complicating factor is that AT&T's 3G network is non-existent
in my home area. They have promised to bring 3G to the area "this
summer". I'm not signing a 2-year contract for a new phone until they
do. If they don't, I may be jumping to Verizon, who already has 3G
service in my area. In that case, this whole question is moot, and I'll
be seeking Verizon Android info)

misc.phone.mobile.android [cross-posted]
but very low traffic -- you're better off at least cross-posting here.

Galaxy S platform, very nice phone, but a bit too big for my own taste,
and I don't like the UI as much as HTC.

I've heard the same story. Regardless, it's not as bad as Apple,
because Google isn't dictating what can and cannot appear in the Market.

http://forums.wireless.att.com/
probably your best bet notwithstanding the risk of censorship by AT&T.

Good idea. Good luck.

not only has google been pulling apps from the android market, but
they've even *deleted* them on people's phones, something apple has
never done. with apple, if an app is pulled, those who bought it get to
keep it.
not only that, but google's developer agreement states that if an app
is pulled, any money made must be refunded to google, including
chargeback fees if any.
