So, naturally after switching to PagePlus from Verizon, I get sent to East
Overshoe, Vermont into the middle of a "Roaming" section. The phone kept
showing "Verizon Wireless" into what I thought was the roaming area, then
it came up "No Service" and then it came up as "Extended Network",
occasionally switching back to "Verizon Wireless".

Then I remembered back to my early days of cell phones when roaming
usually cost a LOT of money, a trick someone at the cell company I was
    with then told me.

Go into the Network setting on your phone and switch it from "Automatic"
or "Any" to "Home". I did that on the way out of No Man's Land and it
blinked for a second and came up as "No Service". It would occasionally
switch to "Verizon Wireless" and then back to "No Service" until I got
    back on Verizon's own network.

    Hachiroki,
Is that still the case? I recall the awful charges from roaming as well, but
thought that went by the wayside several years ago.

Technically, if you're on an older grandfathered plan like the original
America's Choice (as I am) you are charged for some roaming. The reality
is that even when I've used those networks (most of which no longer
exist because they were mostly analog non-Verizon networks) I have not
    been charged roaming.

Verizon used to have two sets of maps on their site, one for older plans
with paid off-extended network roaming, and one for newer plans where
off-extended network roaming was not permitted. In many cases the
difference in coverage area was huge because there were so many vast
rural areas with analog-only coverage. Now those areas are "No
coverage." I used to be able to do a lot of AT&T analog roaming on my
Verizon phones. That's all gone now, replaced by nothing.

What I found is that all those analog cells also had digital service,
but since the analog had far greater range, the coverage is greatly
    reduced with digital only.

Not with PagePlus. If you go into roaming, it's 29 cents a minute!

I would only use it if extremely necessary! Like a dire emergency when I'm
in the roaming area. Luckily, there is just that one area, and I go there
maybe three times a year, if that.

My pageplus PRL changed about 2 months ago to 52015

Since then, my Motorola ROKR z6m does a lot of "extended roaming" with
the blinky triangle onto "Alltel Extended" network, even in the middle
of Charleston where the Verizon signal is nothing to brag about. This
PRL seems to have ADDED the whole Alltel system so now my PP phone
switches from 850A to 850B whenever it pleases and finds a better
    signal.

As long as you don't have to dial PP TWICE, no matter what the display
says, you are NOT being charged for ROAMING! You cannot mistake ROAMING
on PP because you must doubledial to roam. It's that simple.

My PP service has increased with Alltel as Verizon has a few dead spots
in populated areas around Charleston, SC, notably around Summerville,
SC. I'm not being charged Roaming for using the Extended Alltel
    Network....(c;]

I got my Alltel coverage back!....and am one happy camper.

update your PRL and post a reply to this message and tell us what your
    new PP PRL number is.....thanks.

    PRL 52015

You won't be charged roaming UNLESS they force you to doubledial the number
confirming you want to pay roaming charges. Unlike Verizon roaming which
just happens, you MUST agree by doubledialing before being charged roaming
    off PP's system.
