Until Apple decides not to support it anymore, like they did with Flash and

But will likely have little impact on sales of the iPad which is not
used in any of those markets anyway. HP isn't even selling the 500
through retail outlets. Two totally different markets.

The 64GB Slate is $100 more than the 64GB iPad, and there are no cheaper
    models with less memory.

OTOH, the SD slot, camera, and USB ports make the Slate a pretty
compelling device for those that don't care about running iOS
applications. Plug in a USB GPS stick and have a very good mobile GPS.
Plug in a USB DVD drive and it's a DVD player for the car. The Slate is
going to be a device that is used in ways HP never intended.

For a particular value of "incapable".

For whatever reason, the Mac is more than just a clone. Do you know
of anybody who runs a Mac as a clone, with OS X on it? I don't.

Saying that it's "just a clone", is as valid as saying "it's just a
paperweight", as it can be made into a clone or into a paperweight if
that's what you choose to do.

That's not the choice anybody else makes.

Good business expects some failures - and then learns from them.

And the original MacBook Air can be considered a prototype that made
money instead of costing like most prototypes.

I admit my mighty-mouse does work on a PC, and my iPad plugs into a
PC. It doesn't make them PC clones.

And my Mac has the same chip as a PC. It also has a display, USB
ports, and a keyboard. None of that makes it a PC clone.

Apple continues to crush the old Windows & Linux machines with perfectly
crafted products. The new 11 & 13 inch MacBook Airs will wipe out the
rest of the Windows and Linux netbook market.

    A wonderful show!

If you don't like to see advanced software, jump ahead to about 70
minutes in, otherwise just watch the whole thing... it really provides a
    glimpse into the future.

The only problem is that the Mac OS does not run anything beyond iTunes. So
if all you need is a stylish MP3 player the new Mac Air is just the ticket.
And then it nags you to death about buy this! buy this! buy this! You
have to be a real Apple lover to put up with all of that and then have a
Windows machine handy for the times you may want to actually do something.

Those factories build a wide variety of products. The quality, or lack
thereof, is not solely a function of the factory, but more of the design.

That said, there are definitely different quality classes of factories
for the building of products. You pay more for Quanta to build a laptop
than you pay Inventec or Compal or Foxconn. I'm pretty sure that Apple
is using Quanta for the Macbook Pro and the Macbook Air (as did Sony)
because of quality problems with lower cost manufacturers. I think the
higher end Dell machines (Latitude) are also being made by Quanta, but
I'm not sure of this. HP moved a bunch of stuff from Quanta over to
    Inventec.

And don't forget the white box manufacturers, building machines out of
"parts from all over the world that no one else wants" and selling them
under various second tier brand names at very low prices. Those are the
$300 laptops you see on sale at the big box stores, using CPUs with a
very high TDP (and noisy fans to compensate), screens that have too many
bad pixels to be accepted by Sony, Apple, Dell, or HP, etc.

It's very hard to know who is building which laptop. Sometimes you can
get clues from stuff in the BIOS if you know what to look for.
