Right up there with the hand-crank radio.

"Chargeless" devices have already been around for a long time - numerous
solar powered calculators, etc. and there's an advert that has been playing
here recently on the radio for a sunlight powered wristwatch which doesn't
    need battery changes.

Nokia, of course with zero ability to actually innnovate simply steals the
idea, patents it, and then will then no doubt go around suing everyone who
uses it ... it's the only way thay can make money these days.

These aren't solar powered, but use the movements of the
user/carrier/wearer to actuate a piezoelectric device to produce small
    amounts of electricity.

Seiko's been selling kineticly powered watches for some time, and the US
military has been fooling around with generating power from soldiers
    movements.

Yep, that's another way to make a self-charge portable device which has
also been around for a long time. It looks like the "Hollyweird disease"
of there being nothing new and resurrecting the past is now infecting the
mobile phone industry as well as may others. :-(

I got one of those back when I was in middle school in the late 70's.
Had it for about 7 or 8 years, until I lost it. But it never needed a
    battery change.

I know at least one has been solar powered, and that was from over 30
years ago. It turned out to be not as practical as you would think,
because I had to make sure it got enough light to recharge the
battery. That meant either taking it off when I got home and leaving
it under a brightly lit lamp, or leaving it in direct sunlight, which
often caused the display to blacken due to the heat. Nice idea, but a
    bit ahead of its time.

On the whole, I still think I'd prefer using charging tables or charging
mats- simple and easy- just place your device on them and they're charged up
    through electric induction.

You can even get induction mats inserted into your house's garage floor /
parking space to recharge your electric car. :-)

Of course, after years of doing next to nothing with their infrastructure
the greedy electricity companies are now running around desparately trying
to upgrade their equipment to cope with the (perceived) extra load needed
to keep everyone's car charged. The same thing happened, and still is,
with greedy telephone companies and mobile phone companies. :-\

No they're not. Over on the Smart forum, one of the guys in
Californicate reports they just raised the electric rates for charging
the electric cars up to 55-75c/KwH. If electric cars become popular, all
of us will simply be paying 5 to 10 times as much for electricity as we
are now to pay for the increased electrical load, requiring more power
stations (coal because the greenies have pretty much trashed building
more nuclear stations), which simply moves the pollution to the power
plant much worse because charging Li-Ion batteries is only about 65%
efficient, coal power plants are about 35% efficient and 1/3 of the power
generated in America is simply lost by the leakage in the archaic above-
ground electrical system of the 1930's.

Everybody will pay to recharge that electric car for the greenie bastard
down the street....just watch it happen!

Of course it will. The greedy simply get greedier, and they'll try to hide
it behind excuses of adding more infrastructure, etc. while still actually
doing as little as they can get away with. :-(

It's called "supply and demand" ... they supply the electricity, they demand
more money for their own pockets, and we are (more or less) forced to supply
    the money. :-(

If you don't like it, supply your own electricity! If you care to
invest in photo-electric cells, you can get a kilowatt or three on a
sunny day! It's not going to run the air conditioner but it should be
    enough for lights, radio/TV, a small computer or two. . . .

The sad part is the average klod is too stupid to do the simple math and
thinks a 65 watt solar panel for $600 is gonna charge his Chevy volt in a
couple of hours, when it won't in a couple of weeks.

I tried to get some interested in the Chevy Volt forum, but it's so
saturated with fanboiz and company shills, anyone even discussing battery
charging realities and costs is summarily attacked like a rabbit by the
    wolves in deep winter.

We have the same trouble on sailing yachts. Anyone can now buy a 4KW 12
or 24 volt inverter for a few hundred dollars, a real monster of a power
supply high powered transistors have made a reliable reality. But, again
the simple math, the yachties can't understand why a battery that weighs
as much as the boat has so little power stored in it it cannot run that
4KW inverter at 3KW for a week without cranking the diesel to recharge.
There they sit with dead batteries in the dark by 8PM....(c;]

I have a saying for it, "Nothing is funnier than a boater with a new 4KW
inverter heading down the dock with his electric heater in his hand."
That pretty much says it all and I've seen him headed for his boat for
    real many times.

Electric cars are just not ready, yet, to replace the current technology.
It's a great idea, until you start staring at battery charging and
emminent battery replacement at $7-10K....from the greedy stealers.

Also, wouldn't he need to put gas (or diesel fuel) into the generator at some point?
