The cellular license maps for the north-central (great plains) states
have been posted earlier this week. This completes the initial puzzle
and we now have complete cellular license maps for the lower 48 states
    available at http://people.ku.edu/~cinema/wireless/regions.html Take
a look and let me know if you have any comments or corrections.
    Enjoy!

    WA/ID? PLEASE?!?

BTW, good job on the map. ;-)

I guess I'm a little color blind in that I find it difficult to
tell the difference between cingular and uscellular. I am looking at
    the maps that include WI.

GREAT Map....now for a stupid question...what is the difference between side
A and B?...I have never understood that.

    Thanks for you information,

Thanks...both good answers....so when I am in a city and say Verizon has one
side (A or B) is that the side I am using?

If Verizon has neither (A or B) is that when I use another provider either
    in extended mode or roam?

Only if Verizon doesn't have a PCS system operating there
    (Florida, Dallas, New Orleans, etc.).

When the cellular spectrum was licensed in the early 80's, it was
split into two chunks of equal size (25 MHz each) and each chunk (one
of which is known as the A-side license and the other one as the
B-side license) was licensed independently to different companies to
spur competition and accelerate buildout and growth of the network.

Originally, the B-side license was given to the incumbent local
telephone company and the A-side license was auctioned off to the
highest bidder. Due to license aggregation, dis-aggregation, mergers,
and aquisitions, this distinction no longer exists and most major
wireless carriers hold both A-side and B-side licenses in different
    markets.

In fact, out of the top 9 cellular carriers, 6 hold both A-side and
B-side licenses (VZW, Cingular, ALLTEL, USCC, Dobson, and RCC) whereas
3 only hold A-side licenses (ATTWS, WWCA, and Centennial). For
details on the frequency assignments for A-side and B-side see

In WI, USCC only holds A-side licenses and Cingular only holds B-side
licenses, so that should be easy to distinguish. In general, some of
these maps are pushing 10 to 15 or even 20 colors, so it's hard to
find a color scheme that provides sufficient contrast between each set
of adjacent colors. I have found that CRT monitors show the nuances
between similar colors better than LCD monitors, but your milage may
    vary.

Thanks for the pointer. Now I see why Nextel works so good in
    Charleston, SC....

Perhaps incorporating dots, stripes, hash marks, x's, etc., would
    help.

These maps show the licenses for the Cellular Band (A and B side).
These are in the 800 MHz range. Nextel uses spectrum that isn't in the
cellular band - it is the SMR band. This is also near or in the 800 MHz
range, but different from the cellular band, so it not listed. Spring
(along with other carriers) use PCS band in the 1900 MHz range which
uses different licenses than the cellular band, and these maps don't
    show that info either.
