I have an old nokia 3595 that I purchased shortly before the new ones came
out that had the ability to instant message using the AIM network.

Will I be able to upgrade the firmware to get the ability to have IM
    available on the menu?

I already know how to set up AIM through text messages (send
    username<space>password to 265-000)

also, if i just go and buy the new phone, will they make me extend my
    contract?

    Thank you.

    Andrew

Why don't you call Nokia service (1-888-NOKIA-2U) and ask them if it
is a simple firmware upgrade? I'm more inclined to believe though
that it's different firmware. When VoiceStream came out with the
Nokia 3390 "gold" (Nokia 3390b actually) it has different firmware
than the plain Nokia 3390 so it may be the same for the 3595. Call
Nokia and ask them. You can then decide if getting a new phone for
the built in AIM is worth it for you.

When I upgraded my phone from the 3390 to another model without the
built-in AIM I stopped using mobile AIM. Besides mobile AIM uses many
messages and didn't think it was very economically practical to use it
though it is nice to have that connectivity.

How do you log off? Is there a reference for all this somewhere?

to log off you send a blank message to 265-001

for all directions on how to use it, send a blank message to 265-018(this
will get the instructions sent to you via text messaging)

Cool, and thanks for the quick response! But where is all of this
documented? When I did the equivalent a couple of years ago with
Voicestream, there was a web page with all these codes. Is there something
    like that for Cingular?

I had set up text messaging forwarding on my screen name, and after a while
the message for sms-aim got sent to my phone telling me to send a message to
265-018, and thats how Igot involved. I do not know whether or not this is
documented anywhere, but ido know that it seems to work for me.

Does anybody know if there's a counterpart for Yahoo Messenger?

On a particular phone or in general?

In general there is - AIM, MSN Messenger, and ICQ in addition to Yahoo
    Messenger.
