BEWARE OF CINGULAR

Stay away from this provider. Service is terrible, more dead zones than a
cemetery, whole major cities do not have coverage. I went to Phoenix on
business and took my phone so I could call home, and could not get a signal.
I live in NYC. When I called cingular they said they had NO SERVICE IN
PHOENIX. This is a major city and you can't provide service. When I signed
the ridiculous 2 year contract, I was told the phone would work anywhere in
the world, but that is most certainly not the case.When I called cingular
customer service, they were unfriendly and seemed to be annoyed that I had a
complaint. On vacation in Virginia last year, I couldn't get a signal. Once
this contract is up, they are history. Do yourself a favor and steer clear
of this bogus cellular company.

Why wait, write to HQ, with a copy to your state's Attorney General,
asking to get your ETF waived.

I doubt this.

You just don't have the plan that's suitable for your needs.

I have the plan that says, where there's a signal, I have service. I
can drive through Maryland and Virginia, even through the mountains
there, and have signal the entire way.

I guarantee that they have service in Phoenix, because a friend of mine
goes there regularly--and he uses Cingular.

MMMMM, I live and travel all over VA and don't have a problem and I visit

If you go to the Cingular web site, you can not even enter Arizona as a
place to see what the coverage is. I can only assume native coverage is
zero.

perhaps your friend has a TDMA phone and roams on Analog when in
Phoenix, and the OP is uses a GSM phone with no AMPS (Analog) capability?
Either that or you are lying.

Since you live in NYC, you choose from among GSM
dual-band (or tri-band, would explain "the world")
phones. You may have overlooked the two available
GAIT phones that can do GSM, TDMA and analog.
Since you had no service in Phoenix, you seem to
be on a local or regional plan. The Nation GSM
plan would permit use on the available T-Mobile
coverage there.

Studying NYC's current Region GSM plan's map, I
see much of Virginia is uncovered by GSM signal.
Your vacation site could easily be without signal,
as you reported. The GAIT coverage is much more
complete.

Perhaps you made an inappropriate choice of phone
and plan? Choosing a GAIT phone and national plan
would have solved Virginia and Phoenix; a national
GSM plan would have solved Phoenix.

Does cingular even offer a decent GAIT phone? All I've ever seen offered
there is the really low-end crap by ericcson and nokia. Note that nokia
makes some decent phones, but I haven't seen a decent GAIT phone made by
nokia and sold by Cingular. I guess my point is, if you wanted a decent
GAIT phone, could you even GET one through Cingular?

On a side note, I've had good luck travelling all over the country using
Nokia 3595 and Mot. T720 on the Cingular GSM network. But I've got the
Cingular Nation GSM plan on those phones. I think GAIT would be overkill.
Just get a decent plan and a decent phone to go with it. -Dave

Perhaps as all other carrier, Cingular has yet to publish a detailed
accurate coverage map. Only the 1" = 500 miles nonsense drawn by the
marketing department.

Right--but roaming coverage is there, especially for the Nation plans.

Look at the Nation plan coverage--it's the entire continental US that
has cell coverage. If there's a signal, you have coverage.

Thanks for all of the input. I may go the Attorney General route or just
dump them when the contract is up.

How could you make an assumption of this? Have you ever been a Cingular
customer? I read some of your other posts in this group and you are
talking like you know how Cingular works when you are a Sprint PCS
customer. Are you an expert on *all* cellular providers?
