AT&TW and Cingular are going to "merge", but then again there was some
sort of marketing agreement between Sprint and AT&TW announced today
even though one is CDMA, the other TDMA/GSM. I don't get what is going on.

Thats because the agreement wasn't with AT&TW.

AT&T Wireless and AT&T itself are two distinct companies, whose primary
connection to each other is the name. AT&T Wireless was sold to
Cingular, and now AT&T non-Wireless is getting into business reselling
Sprint's service.

No.... you have the information wrong as a lot of people are doing.
The agreement announced was between AT&T (the long distance company) and Sprint
PCS. The agreement was NOT between AT&T Wireless (the cellular company) and
Sprint PCS.
These are two completly seperate companies with no connection other than the
similarity of the name. What AT&T (the long distance company) is saying is that
they are going to want to keep wireless in their name in some form. To do this
they are reaching the agreement with Sprint PCS.
The current NAME usage leaseby AT&T WS runs out about the same time as the
aquisition of AT&T WS by Cingular.

Re: AT&TW/Sprint ?
Actually, it doesn't have anything to do with a lease expiring. Under the
terms of the original contract agreement for the ATTWS spinoff, the name
"AT&T Wireless" reverts back to AT&T Long Distance in the event of a sale or
merger. They just wanted to protect control of the trademark. In any case,
when the Cingular acquisition is complete the name of the company will be
Cingular still and the name "AT&T Wireless" goes back to AT&T Long Distance.
The announcement this week was just saying that the "new" AT&T Wireless (the
post merger company) will be in the business of rebranding and selling
Sprint PCS service.

AT&T (the long distance company) is NOT AT&T Wireless. They spun off
"AT&T Wireless" (ATTWS) as a separate company a few years ago. When
ATTWS disappears in Cingular's gaping maw later this year, AT&T (the
long distance company) intends to jump back in as a reseller of Sprint
service, much like Qwest. They'll sell "AT&T" phones, make their own
"AT&T" rate plans, do their own billing and customer service, but
they'll use Sprint's network, buying airtime wholesale from Sprint.
