I just ran across another standard feature that apparently was
deliberately removed from the 6340i most likely at Cingular's request.
I'd like to kick whoever was responsible for crippling this phone in so
many ways.
Most readers here are probably familiar with CellSocket (and the long
gone Vox2) devices where you drop the cellular into a cradle that has
standard house-style corded phones connected to it allowing incoming and
outgoing cell calls from any of those phones. For some strange reason
I've never found out CellSocket stopped making any units except for
Motorola. I finally found another company that makes a similar unit for
more phones including Nokia. It's the Dock-N-Talk from PhoneLabs at
http://www.phonelabs.com/prd05.asp
Back before CellSocket went Motorola only, they had said the Nokia 6340i
would not work for their Nokia 51xx/61xx model base but they never
investigated why it wouldn't work. Well, the Dock-N-Talk won't work
with it either but at least they have gone to the trouble to find out
why. Turns out the 6340i does not have the command set in firmware that
allows the base to control the phone--such as dialing out. PhoneLabs
says the 6310 and 6360 (and older 5100, 6100, 7100 etc) works fine.
Without the command set there's not much a base can do -- the carkit can
answer the call from the remote handset so a base probably could do that
but not much else.
So once again 6340i users are sucker punched. No Network menus to allow
overriding a weak or bad network selection. No Mode or Network
indicators to allow you to see what the phone is doing. Now this. I'm
almost tempted to try to find a Sony/Ericsson T62u despite the problems
it has had reported and despite the tons of accessories I have for the
Nokia.

Sorry, had to vent :-)

That compatibility problem is a *Nokia* compatibility problem. It's
not a cingular firmware disabling problem as some of the other points
you mentioned. The 6310i which does work with one model of CellSocket
as well as the Phonelabs model works, but does not relay caller ID and
some other things because of the design of the phone. That's not
cingular or any other operator's fault. That's the design of the
phone.
