I am on Cingular Service and been a frustrated due to reception issues
since I moved to the downtown area. I am about to jump contract and pay
the fee. I am interested in T-Mobile since my friends T-Mobile service
    works great in my apartment.

I went out to shop around T-Mobile rates at some local dealers who sell
multiple providers and I was told both services should be exactly the
same since both providers use the same towers.

The dealer told me the reason my friends service works better is
because her phone must have better reception. She has a Sony Ericson
T306 phone. I have tried on my Cingular Service Sony Ericson T68i,
T106, Motorola T720, and Nokia 8290 phones and all have poor service.

Why does Cingular have reception issues where T-Mobile does not if they
use the same towers. Is there something I can do to improve my service
on Cingular? Other then in my apartment Cingular coverage has been
    good.

Perhaps something is retarded with your cellphone. T-Mobile and Cingular
use the same towers in California. Reception should be identical with
    both carriers.

    Right.

Try a phone that has exceptional reception, such as a Nokia 3600, or 6620.
I believe one of the older Sony Ericsson phones had the ability to afix
an external antenna, that may help.

As it should be. EVERY major cellphone provider (Verizon, ATTWS,
Cingular, SprintPCS, NexTel, T-Mobile) has excellent coverage in Los Angeles.

    Mike,

try you phone on the 1900 mhz network only. I might be that you have a
dual mode phone and you might be on the 800mhz ATT network.

    Just a thought.

All - My friend came over and I tried puting her SIM in my unlocked
phone. I got the same reception on T-Mobile as Cingular. Seems the
difference is in the phone itself.

    Mike,

The SE T68 is known to be one of the worst phones in terms of
reception. If you try the Nokia 6200 you should see a huge
    difference.

I'd personally call it no worse than fair.

Yah, have a T68i as a backup backup phone.

    I have a R520m as a backup phone

    I use a T637 as a primary phone.

T68i works fine overseas where GSM coverage is awesome.
It doesn't work too well here in San Fran or in parts of LA because
coverage is spotty and weak and the T68i functions accordingly.

The only thing worse than Chingchingular's spotty non-penitrating GSM
service in Los Angeles is ATTWorthless's GSM service...it has to be the
worst cellular coverage known to consumers.

Our one Cingular phone works very well throughout Los Angeles. We live in
Agoura Hills and spend lots of time in Westlake, Thousand Oaks, various parts
of the San Fernando Valley and West Los Angeles, and we have yet to find it to
be "spotty". In fact it's far better than the Sprint or T-Mobile coverage in
the same areas and it's at least marginally better than our AT&T GSM service.
Our AT&T service has gotten better since the Cingular buyout and I'm finding
myself generally happy with it. It's also much better than the Sprint or
T-Mobile coverage. The only network I know of that could be "better" is
Verizon. Nextel is virtually worthless unless you simply need the 2-way
    functionality.

Thats interesting there Steve, as T-Mobile customers in Southern Calif ARE
ON CINGULAR'S system. You see, T-Mo has a roaming agreement with Cingular
(its transparent) but thats how they get service.....
I have had EVERY provider offered in the Los Angeles area and Verizon is the
best in Socal. While Verizon's prices are the worst, IT WORKS. I have 2
phones, one PDA and a PC-5220 Data card on Verizon. The phone calls are very
good I would say about 95% of the time ( it IS a radio) and the service on
    the datacard(since 1XEVDO) is fast....usually 500K all the time.

It's actually a joint venture between Cingular and T-Mobile.

Hey, you explain it. I'd heard that already but 5 people I know with T-Mobile
hate it, and are dropping it when the contracts are up. It definitely does NOT
work as well as our Cingular or AT&T phones.
