Advice re: changing accounts

My wife and I have 2 separate accounts with AT&T. Both are digital/analog.
My account has a nice discount through the USPS corporate account discount.
What I want to do is merge her account into mine, upgrade the plan, and
change to TDMA/GSM and get new phones. I understand that she has to go
through AT&T to change the financial liability to me and then we have to go
through their "migration department" to change to a different system.

Considering the above scenario, should I go through AT&T for a new plan and
phones or Cingular? Can I cancel the AT&T accounts and start new with
Cingular? At this point, I think that AT&T has a better corporate discount.
After the merge, is Cingular going to support AT&T's digital network or are
they going to make all digital accounts change over to their system? Should
I wait and see how this whole merger pans out before making the change?

Bottom line is: which way should I go to get the best deal?

Why merge them? Why not keep them separate?

You would be changing from TDMA to GSM.

Whichever gives you the better deal for your needs.

Yes, although there might be a termination penalty if your ATTWS contract
hasn't expired.

The networks are being merged. You can keep your ATTWS plan.

discount. One concern of mine is switching from TDMA to GSM. We both work in
San Rafael, CA in Marin County and have been happy with TDMA from our work
area. We live in West Marin and what I've heard is basically nothing works
where we live except maybe Verizon, a few blocks away.

It's been reported that ATTWS will only be selling their "own" plans
until Nov. 15.

If you go through Cingular likely you won't be able to get a TDMA plan.

Yes, immediately if you're not under contract with ATTWS.

Thats there plan. (ATTWS Digital = TDMA) Within 18 months according to
one account.

Find a friend, neighbor or colleague on Cingular now, and test out the
network where you live with a Cingular phone.

GSM coverage will now be at least as good as TDMA, but you would lose AMPS
(analog).

You can buy a Cingular prepaid phone to test service in your area, and return
it for a refund (except for air time used) within the trial period. Better
yet, do this with ATTWS because free roaming on Cingular gives the best
possible coverage. (Vice versa is not yet available here in Northern
California, but should be available soon.)

You didnt like the answers you got there that you asked same question on
USENET? Sorry I am not currently in L.A.

Due to terrain there are many parts of Los Angeles with dead zones from
any carrier. And like other cities indoor coverage is often problematic,
regardless of the carrier or phone model.

I travel alot from Stensons beach north to Point Reyes station my sisters
ATT phone works better than my cingular(v400) she has a V60 tdma phone but
it has gotten better over the last year

Just add your FAN (Foundation Account Number) to her account. They don't
check anything, they just add the discount to her account.

Starting the 15th you can cancel any ATTWS contract to migrate to a Cingular
plan with a 2 year agreement with absolutely no ETF from ATT. Please read
that carefully.

Yes unfortunately the Digital One Rate is still a TDMA plan. We still have
some people selling these plans.

Wait until the 15th for some really nice Cingular migration offers to
existing ATT customers.
