For some DCT3 and all new DCT4 Nokia phones, the phone will read special
instructions from the sim card. For cingular, the newer sim cards will
override the alpha tag so when your roaming on a network other than
Cingular it will appear as "Cinguler Extend". As you have seen some
older phones can't read this information as this GSM standard was
adopted after the firmware on are phone was released. Many DCT3 and
earlier phones will display the correct alpha tag.

On a side note, these older phones also can not read the information
from the sim that locks out the network selection menu so users with
these phones can manually select what network they are on. The bad news
is I don't of any of these phones that support 850mhz, but now that
    Cingular customer's can roam on At&t's 1900 network, this isn't a problem.

I'm in San Diego. At one location, sometimes, I get 5 bars, sometimes just
one bar. I used to get just one bar and the phone would at times go into
    Cingular-Extend.

They are a 1900MHz only carrier so why would they care about the 800MHz (not
850 people) band. Unless they come up with a really GREAT roaming agreement
with someone that has a LOT of 800 (Cingular maybe) they won't care.

    It's called GSM 850.

    True. That was my point.

Some stuff has changed here in West Los Angeles as well. My display used to
say AT&T Wireless on my NEC 525. Now it says AT&T/Cingular. There is no
Cingular coverage at my home (up a canyon and I know exactly who has little
micro-towers around here). Looks like they changed the identifier around
    here.

A SIM update is taking out the old SIM and putting in a new one.

"AT&T" towers are giving you Cingular coverage, since Cingular owns
them (or, more properly, the radio equipment and lines on them) now.

SIM updates are commonly done by the carrier OTA (over the air).

Oops, wrong "update". Supposedly, one can "update" the blue SIM to an
orange SIM, saving the customer the cost of a new phone. (In practice
it may not work because Cingular may not give out the code. May not -
I haven't had the need to try yet.)

So can my Sony Ericsson Z600 when using an ATTWS SIM, but not when using a
Cingular SIM, because the carrier programming is different.
