Alright, heres the scenario. Parents push us into a 2 year contract with
cingular. Not bad, after a year and a half we were ready for new phones.
Ends up, just as our ****ty contract expires, my IDIOT dad takes the
courtesy of signing us up for a whole nother ****ing two years! well,
it aint so bad. We thought that it wouldnt be bad, we can just get
better phones. Ends up we are STUCK with the same ****ty phones we got
for free. According to the people at the store, and the website, we cant
upgrade the ****ing phones.
I think its a load of crap. There must be some damn we to change phones,
I just dont understand the workings of it.
Currently my phones is a Nokia 3595. Sadly, I dont know what kind of
card I have in there.
Isnt it possible to just throw the card into another phone and use it? I
know there must be other things to do, but can anyone help me out with this?
Thanks for any advice/tips!

Sure, you can buy another phone. Unfortunately, it will probably be
more expensive. What I have hear some have success with is going in and
extending the contract, basically starting it over for 2 years. Maybe
it is too recent for you to do that.

If you think a Nokia 3595 is ****ty . . . what the heck were you thinking of
replacing it, and where can I get one? -Dave

Its only ****ty because its not the type of phone i need. The screen
easily gets scratched, the the buttons ruined. I need a flip phone to
protect both. Its a good phone..just not the one suitable enough for my
conditions.

What kind of phone would it support? Do i have to go into the cingular
store to switch? If not, how would I keep the same service by myself?

You need a GSM phone capable of the frequencies that Cingular uses.
Others will probably chime in with what those are. Either the Cingular
web site, or others like letstalk.com or phonescoop.com will narrow down
your choices. Going to manufacturer's sites (at least Motorola's) will
also show you which phones will work.
Then pop the SIM out from your Nokia and put it in the new phone. I am
new to GSM phones, having had CDMA in the past, but I assume the SIMs
are universal.
The only other thing I can think of is if you found someone that was
trying to sell you a locked phone to another provider. If you get a new
phone, that should be easier to determine as you would be unlikely to
get a locked phone from anyone but the carrier, or someone that is
obviously selling it with service from them.

Re: Argh, Question!
If you're stuck in a 2 year contract, you probably won't get a new phone
from Cingular 'til the contract ends. I'm surprised that your dad renewed
the contract but did not get new phone. Why renew then?
An alternative would be to go on eBay and buy a GSM phone that supports
850MHz and 1900MHz, then simply move your sim card over to that new phone.
Make sure the phone is for Cingular or unlocked for all networks.

Who's the customer of record (whose signature is on the original
contract)? If it's yours, you don't have an extension - only the
person whose signature is on the original contract (and whose drivers
license was copied) can extend it.
If your dad is the customer of record, hand him your phones, go to a
Cingular (or independent) store and activate 2 phones under your own
name.

"What kind"? Meaning what? It's a SIM card. If it's 2 years old,
it's a 32k SIM card. It's a Cingular SIM card. Did you mean anything
else? (Most phones for the same carrier accept most SIM cards from
that carrier - currently all Cingular phones accept Cingular cards
[they don't even ship the card in the box with the phone].).

I think a lot of the posters that use the language they used would not want
to eat with that kind of mouth. If you cant articulate your thoughts in a
civilized manner, its a clear indication that you are just exactly the
opposite that you are trying to show yourself to be: grown up. Using bad
language in a ng is in poor taste, not to mention how it affects the kids
that read this ng as well. Treat others as you would want your children to
be treated and use what little you have between your ears when you pick your
words.
