When I turn on the phont after being left iding for hours, I get this
message:
Local date: .........
New time: ........
Update clock?
It is getting annoying. Can it always take the date/time from the cell
tower? I live in a fringe signal area, is this the reason?

That's not normal, even for a fringe area. Sounds like a phone fault.

Re: Sony Ericsson T237
I'm having the same problem with the same phone.
I just started service today and should have bought online instead. I
wanted to see what I was getting and boy did I get it. I signed up for two
years expecting to get a decent phone and instead got stuck with the 237.
The phone is always full of static regardless of where I am. I'm not sure
if this is the phone or Cingular. Overall the quality of my calls reminds me
of the old days where you felt the need to yell over the static to be heard
and you can't wait for your call to end to get away from it. I live in area
that has plenty of towers and I always have 5 bars so it's not a weak signal
issue. Is this a known phone issue or a common Cingular issue?
I tried calling up to see if I could switch by cancelling my order and
getting a better free phone online. The word on this was no unless I wanted
to lose my number. Since I just ported this number over to Cingular and have
had it for years I can't risk it. You would think that something could be
done to satisfy a new customer but i was told no to every request for a
decent phone. The only viable suggestion they gave me was to go buy a new
one I liked. So I'm a customer of 6 hours and already unhappy with a crappy
phone that I can replace by spending more money or by giving up the phone
number I've had for 5 years.
Anyone having a constructive suggestion feel free to chime in.

Probably the phone.

It's not a common Cingular issue -- GSM is first-rate in call quality.

If you bought the phone from a Cingular store (not an independent dealer), you
have 30 days to return it and get something else instead (without losing your
number).

Re: Sony Ericsson T237
I'll have the phone tested to see if it's the network or the phone but the
issue of returning it for another is the problem.
The Cingular people offer this phone (237) free onsite at the store but no
others. The website (online store) offers a choice of 5 free phones. I
would like to get one of the 5 options but was told that it would only be
possible if I cancelled my service at the brick and mortar store and then
re-subscribed online. This is where I lose the number; by cancelling
service and the restarting it. Since it's on all my business cards, etc for
the last 5 years I can't give it up. This is where I'm stuck. I guess an
option would be to port to another company and then sign up online and port
back to Cingular again. This of course unless there is some rule about
porting more than once.

Let me see if I understand this.... a Cingular retail website offers 5
choices (for your area), a Cingular retail store offers 1 choice (in
your area), and you accept this obvious and blatant error? If I were
you, I'd re-visit that store, confirm this is true, and threaten to piss
on someone's desk if they don't get their **** together. You may also
learn you've misunderstood something.
Personally, I think your new phone has a defect, which is easily remedied.

Re: Sony Ericsson T237
If I where you I'd just make it easier upon myself, and go on ebay -
and purchase a phone with an 850mhz band, one that I've done research
on, and use it as my primary phone and keep that chitty 237 as a
backup. Or simply go to one of the many online GSM phone sales-stores
and purchase a brand new, unlocked, unbranded phone which preferebly
has the 850mhz band and use it for the primary phone. It's not like
they're going to give you any kind of deal when you purchase another
phone from them anyway. This way you at least get an unbranded,
unlocked one which if you end up liking you may use later on with other
providers.

The only other GSM provider in the USA is T-Mobile, which doesn't use the 850
band.
