Sprint - the US's third biggest mobile telco - and fifth-place rival
Nextel are reportedly in talks about a possible merger. The deal
would create a carrier with approximately 39m subscribers and a
market value of around $70bn.

Market leader Cingular bought AT&T Wireless Services for $41.3bn in
October creating more pressure on rivals to increase their size in
order to compete effectively. The Wall Street Journal quotes unnamed
source in reporting that negotiations between Sprint and Nextel are
ongoing, but a deal is far from certain. Any agreement would almost
certainly be an all-share transaction, it adds.

The putative deal would consolidate Sprint's position in the number
three slot behind Cingular and Verizon Wireless and ahead of T-Mobile
while reducing the number of large US mobile-phone carriers from five
to four. A merger would give Sprint access to Nextel's business
customers, who tend to be more loyal and spend more than regular
consumers thanks in part to Nextel's popular "walkie-talkie" mobile
service. Meanwhile Cingular is further ahead than Verizon in
selecting technology to roll out 3G mobile services.

The Register needs better reporters. There's no "reportedly" about the
discussions. They were confirmed by both companies Thursday afternoon.

I wouldn't be surprised if one of the cable companies that has
invested significant money in VOIP, like Time Warner, wouldn't make a
run for Sprint's LD business if they tried to sell it. Already, Sprint
provides the actual long distance interconnection for TW's VOIP
customers. TW has the number of customers to make it worth its while,
and they too could resell that LD access to other VOIP players.

Sprint Corp. is in advanced negotiations to buy Nextel Communications
Inc. for more than $36 billion in a mostly stock deal that would
combine the No. 3 and No. 5 U.S. wireless service carriers, sources
familiar with the situation said Friday.

Under the terms currently being considered, Sprint aims to pay 1.3
shares of its stock for each share of Nextel. It also would pay a
small amount of cash that would give Sprint a slightly larger
ownership stake in the company for tax purposes, sources said.

An agreement could be announced early next week, barring any
complications, the sources said.

Based on the current stock prices, Sprint's offer would value
Nextel's stock at $31.95 a share, plus some cash. The companies
declined to comment.

PTT (Push-To-Talk) has been a big hit for Nextel, and other carriers are
rushing to match it, so it's not likely to be dropped. ;-) As Nextel has
been evaluating upgrades from iDEN, the importance of PTT has been a major
stumbling block -- the initial implementation on CDMA2000, reportedly the
upgrade technology favored by Nextel, hasn't been as good as iDEN or even
Nokia on GSM.

Believe it or not there are people who *want* that annoying feature!
Nextel's biggest market is *business* and many businesses such as
contractors really *like* the feature though as many people point out
it does seem like an annoying feature with all the "cheeps."

I believe every word you're writing here. I've had all types of
experiences with Sprint Spectrum and Sprint Telephone Services, both
on a consumer side and government side. Sprint shines in the not
giving a flying fark about their customers side or about the quality
of their services. I am thoroughly dissapointed with Sprint and any
who fail to see the error in Sprint's ways.

I do understand why Bob the contractor would want a walkie talkie out on the
construction site. But all the beeping and blasting speakerphones that are a
typical Nextel user are quite annoying and not appropriate for most other
business settings.
