DELL outsources extensively. They only brought some of it back for the high
profile customers who complained and then spinned it to make it sound like
    all support was here.

Not entirely true. Sprint has WLNP support in multiple=20
    locations, including within the USA.

I dont think this merger will be good. I just heard a lot people will
    be laid off

How can that be good? To top it off, there is NO real push to talk
except IDEN. This will mean that Sprint/Nextel will have run dual
    networks for a long time.

If that's your only criteria, than all mergers are bad... Personally, yes, I
figure there will be some layoffs. You'd hope that the jobs would be cut more
through attrition than through layoffs, but...

You've not read any of the recent press, have you. Nextel is already planning
to migrate to CDMA, and Sprint already runs CDMA throughout their network. iDEN
is based on TDMA, and Nextel is the last major TDMA-only carrier. TDMA is dead.
All of the other TDMA carriers are migrating to GSM.

Motorola apparently already has an iDEN-CDMA bridge ready to market.

Improves efficiency, reducing costs, thereby resulting in improved service and
    lower prices.

Both CDMA2000 and GSM now have PTT technology.

Heard where? This sort of conflicts with what you say below.

Nextel has committed to iDen through 2007 (2008?). And they have also
stated that they won't give it up until a completely comparable (if not
better) PTT product is available on CDMA. And running two networks for a
couple of years guarantees more jobs than it eliminates (the conflict in
    statements I mentioned earlier).

I thought I heard Nextel also had committed to support high-speed data.
I know very little about iDEN, but I've heard it can't handle the data.
If true, it sounds as though Nextel's caught in a squeeze.

They are successfully running high speed data in NC. Full rollout was being
considered, but the network upgrade costs were pretty steep ($3B). This and
the spectrum swap would have been doable, but quite expensive. No squeeze-
just a lot of money to spend.

GSM *is* TDMA based! If you meant IS-136 you should say so.

Yes. You're right, and I *did* mean IS-136.
