I have a Sony T62u GAIT phone and I got it activated on a GAIT plan with a
32k SIM that was in my Sony T616 that I had previously been using with a GSM
Nation plan. After reading some things in this newsgroup about the 64k SIM
being more desirable I was wondering if it was necessary for the GAIT phone
to have a 64k SIM to fully cover all the new AT&T towers that have been
added to Cingular's coverage. Any answers? Thanks

Yes, but Cingular may not tell you that, or they'd be obligated to give
you one, rather than charge you $20

Actually no -- a standard GAIT SIM will roam on both networks.

Is there an easy way to determine whether one has a 32k or 64k sim?

    Bill

It's printed right on the SIM.

Open your phone and look at the Sim, it will be appropriately labeled.

As I stated above, the SIM actually came with my T616 which is a GSM only
phone and was a 32k chip. If my GAIT phone doesn't need a 64k chip then why
does any Cingular phone need a 64k chip?

It's needed for ENS, which treats both networks as one big virtual network,
rather than a Home network and a roaming network, which can give better
performance where a Home network signal that's weak but still "usable" would
otherwise prevent roaming on a better signal.

So having a 64k chip would be advantageous for my T62u to give it the best
possible signal strength at all times?

No, it only matters if the phone supports ENS.

Cause it now has more to keep track of the Cingular Netowrk, and the
    AT&T Wireless Network.

Yes. Its very helpful in some areas, makes little or no difference in
other areas, but Cingular wont ever tell you the truth, cause if they
tell you you should have it, then you might (rightly) expect it for
free, and they'd rather sell it to you for $20.

I don't know what company stores are doing, Jack, but I put 64k SIMS
in all the cingular phones I sell. If I need one in my store I can't
    give my customers less.

Nope. Roaming works fine on 32K SIMs.
