You have that backwards (as usual).

Re: Heads Up! ---> Mobile Phone Tools v3.11h - US English Version <---
I got mine for free? Who told you that? I paid for the phone bundle
(which also included a set of covers and a case) and the price was based
on the total contents of the package - not just the phone. I could have
bought the phone for less without the software. Different bundles are
priced differently. When you buy a drill with two batteries it's more
than the same drill packaged with only one battery. But go ahead and
steal another battery if you need one.
BVRP and Motorola don't make the decision on whether to bundle the
software with a phone - the carrier/retailer decides on the bundling
they wish to offer. Since mine came with extra covers and a case is it
OK to steal those too? Why is it "screwing people" for a vendor to offer
a lower priced bundle without the software? I'm guessing that 90% of the
people who buy a phone don't use the software so why should they have to
pay for it?
Apparently there are a lot of people who don't consider downloading the
product without paying to be stealing. So I guess, by their logic, it's
OK to walk into a store that sells the disk, grab one and just walk out
without paying for it. Or is that too bold? Maybe it's OK just when they
know they won't be caught.
You didn't realize that you'd need software but when you did you bought
it. You had a choice between competing products (i.e. Datapilot) and
bought it bundled with a cable to meet your needs. You then say it's OK
if people steal the software - is it OK if they walk into a store and
steal the cable too? Why is it that software, which costs a lot more to
develop, support and upgrade than a cable - is fair game but the cable
(which costs about a buck to make and is sold for 1000% more) is not?
If it's fine by you that people get it for free then please don't
complain when you can't get future support or upgrades because the
company just isn't making enough to make it worth their while. If it's
not worth the $16 price then people shouldn't use it.

It seemed a bit odd that you wrote about how folks should have to pay
for the software and then, in another post, mentioned getting it with
the phone. I understand your distinction now but I do not accept it.
You do not need two batteries to perform a primary function of a
drill. That is an option.
One of the primary reasons that I bought the v551 was because I wanted
a camera phone. I could have bought a cheaper one without that
feature. Integral to using that feature is the ability to get photos
off the phone. That is not an add-on. That is critical. I should have
checked closer I suppose, but it seemed logical that the phone would
come with the necessary hardware and software. In fact, when I called
Cingular about it, they said that the ONLY way to get the photos off
was to email them to myself at 25 cents each. Nice revenue stream.
Sort of assumes one has email I guess.
On the other hand, I just bought a cheap little camcorder last week.
$100. Not great obviously but it takes good pictures and ok videos.
And it is adorable. It came with a cable to allow you to play them
back on the TV. By your standards, that is sufficient.
Even if folks wanted to save the videos, it uses SD media and people
can buy a cheap multi-media reader for their PC. But, for $100, the
company threw in the connecting USB cable as well as decent software
and drivers. That is what a company that cares about customers does.
For my next phone I will consider that Motorola or Cingular does not
care.

Perhaps, but then you would have given up other things (e.g., EDGE) as well --
there's much more to the V551 than the camera.
>Integral to using that feature is the ability to get photos
>off the phone. That is not an add-on. That is critical.
No problem -- the phone is capable of sending photos by both MMS and email.
Also, some customers (like me) prefer to use Bluetooth and other software, and
so aren't interested in paying for a cable and Motorola software with the
phone -- we'd rather pay less for the phone. TANSTAAFL*.
>I should have
>checked closer I suppose,
You should have checked closer definitely. That's not the fault of either
Motorola or Cingular.
>but it seemed logical that the phone would
>come with the necessary hardware and software.
No problem -- the cable and PhoneTools aren't really necessary.
>In fact, when I called

You might as well say that about voice too.
>Sort of assumes one has email I guess.
You don't have email?!

I think it is.

Had those been sold separately, it could have reduced the price of the
camcorder, which would have been an advantage to those that either didn't want
the add-ons, or would prefer something else and don't want to pay for software
twice. TANSTAAFL*.
>That is what a company that cares about customers does.
No, that's just one way of packaging a product. If you don't like that,
choose something else -- that's how a market works.
>For my next phone I will consider that Motorola or Cingular does not
>care.
Of course they care. They just don't share your opinion that the cable and
software are essential. And I think they're probably right -- I'd be willing
to bet that the majority of customers not only don't think the cable and
software are essential, but also not worth getting, and are happier not having
to pay for them. TANSTAAFL*. If you look around you'll find that many other
cell phones, including those with cameras, don't come with cables either.
Given that the cable and software are available for only about $20

Actually the price is $30 for the cable and $30 for the software from
Motorola. If it wasn't for your setting up this newsgroup I wouldn't
have known that there were other alternatives. Thanks. I only found
out about you setting it up via some nasty posting that I read but I
appreciate your opinions even if I disagree on this point.
I will have to look into a bluetooth link. I do have the bluetooth
headset (a gift). I currently I do not have bluetooth on my
computer(s) but I'll see if I can find an adapter. It seems a less
clunky way of loading games than using Midway. I might even get some
extra ringtones but that is not high on my list of things to do.
I haven't done much with EDGE either since I haven't used the phone
for internet. But I wanted it just in case.

Very nice. And true enough. But I like newsgroups. Things are
organized much better than on many of the website forums. I mean
message threads and such.
