I have had Cingular for more than a month and in the beginning signal was
very strong, but since Sunday I can no longer dial or receive calls from my
home in Foster City. Went to a local Cingular store and they seem to be
aware of the problem. They took my phone number and was told that they will
try to remotely reprogram my telephone so it will use ATTWS network instead
of Cingular . That was 3 days ago and there still not signal. Anybody has
any idea if this will be a permanent situation. I had Cingular 2 years ago
and the reason I switched , then, to Sprint was that there was no signal in
my home (Foster City). I did not like Sprint and went back to Cingular after
the merger with ATTWS hoping that signal will be ok now. It did work that
was until this sunday . Should I look for another carrier. I have just
signed 2 year contract. Any ideas ?

Re: Cingular in Foster City CA
The reason this happened is that Cingular has never had native service in
CA, you were on T-Mobile's system. Your phone needs a new IRDB, but here's
the rub: you need a good signal to receive it over the air. They could
re-authorize your number over the T-Mobile system to download the new IRDB.
Otherwise they have to download it at a Cingular corporate store (good
luck). I'd call Customer Service and ask them how to get your phone working
again as it is from something that Cingular did (turn off access to the
T-Mobile system to use the ATT system).

Actually, it's the other way around. T-Mobile never had native service
and was using Cingular's system in California as an MVNO (Mobile Virtual
Network Operator). The Cingular system in California used to be PacBell
Wireless. Cingular never had its own infrastructure in New York, in
which it then was an MVNO on T-Mobile. Cingular never had native TDMA
coverage in California, in which cases it primarily used the AT&T
Wireless TDMA system for its roaming customers from other parts of the
country.
If you haven't tried already (but you probably have) is to power cycle
the phone, as digital phones are mobile computers with RF capability.
Other than that, I'd just try communicating with Cingular that your
phone is now unusable. Do any other people with Cingular have the
problem (whether they have a Cingular or AT&T Wireless phone)?
It could be that Cingular is "reprogramming" the tower(s) in your area.
Hopefully this is the case, as it will be up after the engineering
team is finished.

I have Motorola v551 and that one sometimes has weak signal on the 2nd floor

Re: Cingular in Foster City CA
I am in Foster City and I too experiene the same problem tadp reported.
In my case, I had switched to Cingular a little too early (May last
year i think) thinking that ATT and Cingular were sharing stuff
already. At that time ATT signal was great all around Foster City. To
my dissappointment Cingular didn't work in most residences I went to in
Foster City. Basically, the close I went to the bay (towards redwood
shores direction) the weaker the signal got. I was really annoyed
because the ATT signal was very strong in all these areas.
Another thing that bugged me was the way Cingular prevented me from
selecting the network i want to be in. That time, if i had an ATT
service, I could go to GSM network selection and pick ATT or Cingular
as the net I want to me in, and I could also stop the phone from
automatically selecting the net.
I called up Cingular and I was told that the physical merger would
happen in November and till then I had to put up with this. As for the
network selection issue, Cingular said it was how my Cingular SIM was
programmed.
Anyway, the signal got better in November and I could even use the
phone in the elevators in foster city. But the honeymoon seem to be
over. The signal is patchy again and signal drops to worse than May
2004 levels as I drive south in Foster city. As you said, this started
to happen since 4-5 days ago.
Four more months .. if they still sell ATT and Cingular service
separately I am going to move back to ATT. But who knows who is going
to buy whom and how crappy the service is going to get. All I need is a
reliable GSM mobile signal for less than $40. I dont want any bells and
whistels like MMS or camera or MP3 player or polyphonic ringtones. Why
is it so hard to get it here?
Btw, mine is a SE T637.

BRAND NEW unlocked ones are selling for $195.00,
so you'd be lucky to get $150.
It's a common and useful practice however to pay for ETFs when one
leaves a Carrier.

Re: Cingular in Foster City CA
I think they give you 30 days to return the phone. This applies to people
who were with attws when they switch to a cingular phone/plan. I would call
customer service and tell them what's going on. They will help you and may
even waive the etf.

If the service has really deteriorated significantly, no ETF would apply.

Re: Cingular in Foster City CA
Yes, in my case service deteriorated to the point that both my phones are
useless where I live in Foster City - I have no signal in my home and rarely
have one in my backyard. Also, my service was great during the month of
December and it only deteriorated end of January, so I am past 30 days
period. You think that they will let me of the 2 year contract ?
