I am considering a Sony Ericsson Z500a. I would only need sporatic online
access with it, and thus no need for an expensive data plan. Can such a
phone be used as an analog modem with Cingular's network, and is there
anything I have to arrange for to make it work?

    thanks.

The phone has no analog capability.

Sony tells me it can be used as an analog for dialing into a regular modem
pool, but that some phone companies block that ability in the firmware.
    Does Cingular do this?

Evan was probably referring to analog networks (ie non GSM).

Anyway, the Z500A, with the correct cable (USB or serial) will be able to
dial-up to a modem pool and connect. You can download the software which
will facilitate this at SonyEricsson's website.
It will certainly be able to use GPRS and EDGE speeds (or at least GSM if
those others are not available), though you will have to pay for data usage
    per kB.
I have not yet determined whether you can use it at the leisurely rate of
9.6 kb/s (CSD) so you can use your minutes with it. (Note that your account
must most likely be correctly provisioned for this to work independently of
    your phone).
I own a V400 and have not played sufficiently with the Z500A to give more
    specifics.

Re: Cell phone as analog modem?

So is CSD different than simple dialup?

EDGE and GPRS are tempting.... but with plans starting in the $20-30 range
per month, and with me being such a sporatic user, I cannot justify going
    that route.

    Thanks,
    Josh
