What does "digital" mean in technical (versus marketing) terms?

The Verizon coverage map only shows "Digital" or "No coverage".
    Clarksville, VA shows coverage.

I did a test in Clarksville Virginia. There is a cellular tower there by
    Alltel.

I had three phones with me.

    1. The Alltel phone (CDMA) worked well.
    2. The Cingular Dual Mode (Analog/GSM 1900) Ericsson worked good on Analog A
And it worked, just barely, on Analog B

I dialed 611 on Analog A and Cingular answered.

    3. The Cingular Nation, Nokia 6340i would not connect to anything.

I took the SIM out of the Ericsson and put it in t Nokia. The Nokia
still would not connect to anything. This configuration works fine any
    place I go with GSM.

    Any suggestions or explanations?

It sounds like you're on a GSM plan, ¿right?

The analog module of the Ericsson phone allows you to use the analog
with your SIM card. The ESN of the Nokia phone is not registered with
the network. In TDMA/AMPS mode, the ESN is required to be registered
with the proper SIM for the Nokia 6340i. If you are able to get your
plan provisioned for the GAIT, the Nokia should start working.

    Thanks!
    That is very helpful information.

I was able to get the GAIT option added to the account. The test is 80
miles away so I am unsure when I will make a test run, but it will be soon.

I think you are telling me that the SIM from the Ericsson has something
on it that is required to make the Nokia work in the described
    situation. Right?

I'm not sure the exactly what is happening, but when another SIM is
inside the GAIT phone, TDMA and AMPS will NOT function (except emergency
calls and calling the network operator). When your SIM (the SIM
registered with the ESN on the account) is in the phone, it works.

Good luck on your test, I hope it works for you, and let us know the
    results.

When they added the GAIT option to the account, they also added the ESN
number. a short time later the phone received a message "Power off/on".

I did that. From here, I assume something was written to the SIM,
    probably including the ESN.

The Cingular Plan is Nation 250.

    Assumptions:

-Now the SIM has the ESN and that must match the Phone's ESN.

    Observation:
I was looking for a Nokia menu item that was added. I did not find anything.

    I did observe this:
    Menu/ Settings/ Phone Settings/ System Select:
    -- Automatic
    -- Manual
    ----Cingular
    ----AT&T Wireless

    Those are the only choices.
I don't know the ramifications of that. For example, does that mean
that I can't roam to Verizon?

Cingular and Verizon Wireless despise each other, and will only allow
roaming on each other's systems as a desperate last resort, if at all.
I had the Preferred Nation plan, and I only roamed on VZW twice -- once
in an area where it was the only signal, and other other when I upgraded
from a TDMA phone to a GAIT phone while roaming and was unable to
receive an IRDB update. I had Cingular for almost 2 years before
switching to the ATTWS side for international GSM coverage (Canada
included as an add-on to any plan instead of overpriced inflated North
    American Plans.)

    Good luck with everything.

Only in those limited areas where Cingular has contracted with Verizon
    to do so.
