Tryint to make Nokia 6340i (trimode) work with Analog

Finally an observation by a different Cingular service rep has exposed
the answer.

After getting the NATION GAIT/GSM option added to the account,
and the ESN entered into the system,
another 80 mile one way test trip.

The phone still had no coverage, where the Ericcson Dualmode phone did.
Dilaing 611 with the Ericson, The recorded answer said, "Cingular Wireless"

I found a Roaming entry on mu bill that did nto identify the company,
but the city; Rocky Mount.

A call back to Tech Support at Cingular, and the tech finally observed
the ESN field was blank.

He tried to enter the ESN again, and not error message occurred...

but the ESN field remained blank.

Research determined that the GSM Nation plan will not allow the system
to accept any ESN.

That's gotta be wrong - too many people have reported it working.
Without the ESN neither TDMA or AMPS would work so what would be the
point of having the GAIT option? I would suspect the GAIT option is not
entered correctly on the account. I think someone said it's a two-part
option--maybe only half was done.

Interesting. Something is amiss here. To wit, I recently did the
following, in this order: (1) opened a new Cingular Nation account; (2)
then purchased a new Nokia 6340i phone from an independent dealer; (3)
called Cingular's customer service and had the "GAIT for GSM" option
added; (4) moved the SIM from the phone I had acquired when opening the
account and placed it into the 6340i.

Cingular's customer service rep. was knowledgeable, informed, and
helpful and cheerfully took the serial number and the ESN of the phone
and enabled GAIT. From that time forward, I have been able to
send/receive calls on GSM, TDMA, and the occasional analog call when up
in the boonies of northern New England.

Is that research? No, it is not. But it does demonstrate that, at
least in my situation, the GSM Nation plan *will* accept the ESN of phones.

What can I say.
The 1st service rep said he entered it into the form on the screen.
I got a message on the phone to Power Off/On and I did.

A few days later when it did not work when I tested it, I called again.
The service rep observed there was no ESN in the profile record but the
GAIT option was there. ESN was blank.
She tried to enter it two times. It seemed to take it, but the ESN kept
blanking out. She checked with supervisor and was told that is the way
it is supposed to work. Maybe it is regional, too. I think there is
nothing else I can do.

Perhaps insist that a problem ticket be opened? It's pretty obvious
that the ESN *must* be entered for the GAIT function to work so
something is clearly busted somewhere.

I went through this for two months. Cingular techs simply enable your
GAIT knowing it will be gone again.

By the way try calling you number while the Cingular techs enable your
GAIT. No voice mail so people believe your number is disconnected.

Every GAIT customer I know in Atlanta has switched to Verizon.

I believe you still have GAIT in Dallas but its gone in GA, NC

One day you may find Cingular turned off GAIT in TX without warning.

Make sure that they have your 6340i as the active phone on your
account not your new phone. I think it will accept your ESN that way.
Also if you use the 64k sim in the 6340i it will show GSM only when
you check in programming mode.

I have been using 2 6340I on GSM nation plan for a long time.
