I was reading in a VZW forum that they found you can personally shut off
your voice mail by dialing *770 for off and *70 to turn it back on (not
    available in all areas).

I know Cingular is a completely different system but was wondering if we
had this option also without having to call CS.

    Thanks.

Are you talking about actually eliminating vmail service on your account
altogether, or just temporarily disabling the forwarding of unanswered
calls to your vmail service? The former does require CS assistance,
while the latter is possible with dial codes - though I have no clue
what they'd be. Maybe someone will pounce in here and tell us.

Was looking to see if there are dial codes that could do it temporarily.

Been awhile since I tried it (vm turned off perm to allow a one-number
service to take it) but these used to work on Cingular unless they're
    TDMA only:
    *51 turns VM on
    *52 turns VM off

    temporarily.

If you have a GSM phone just go to the call forwarding menu and change
all the options (busy, no answer, out of reach, etc) to not forward
anywhere. When you want to re-enable VM, just set the appropriate call
type to forward to your voicemail number.

You can just as easily forward calls to a landline or other phone,
though you may be charged airtime for that.

Your call management options are much greater in GSM than with any
    other system.

What's the code to re-establish the voicemail forwarding?
