Hello, I just purchased a used phone that is locked to Cingular. What is the
best way to go about getting this unlocked so I can use it with T-Mobile?
Thanks!

It would help if we knew the make/model of phone.

Of course! Sorry about that! It's a Siemens SX66.

The code is unique and based on the electronic serial number of your
phone. You must get it from the cellular provider that issued the phone, or a
third-party unlocking service that has access to the database of unlock
codes. Otherwise it will need to be unlocked electronically using a data
cable and software, or a special piece of equipment.

The only guarantee is that it will work for voice telephone calls.
To use the web browser and MMS you will have to reprogram the phone's data
settings to work with T-Mobile; however their web site can send browser
messages to your phone that will do the work for you ... PROVIDED the
cellular carrier that originally issued the phone has not disabled the
ability to change those settings.

Given that somebody already has a USB cable, is that as simple as it sounds?
i.e. Find the software, download it, run it....?

Usually the way that works is that unlocking services have you
download "client" software that requires internet access. You buy "credit"
to enable it to unlock phone(s), and that feature is activated by
communicating with the vendor for the number of credits purchased.
