Prior to the merger between Cingular and ATT, had ATT completely converted
over to GSM, or are there still some locations that are still using
antiquated TDMA technology? If they are still running TDMA, when will the
entire network be converted over to GSM?

TDMA is still being used by Cingular. I am on the network as my plan is far
better then the current GSM. In addition, the GSM coverage was not as good
as the TDMA in my area (pre-Cingular). So far, I have not heard I will have
to change just that they are not expanding it.

Both Cingular and ATTWS still had TDMA in place at the time of combination,
but GSM was also present in nearly all towers. Though ATTWS claimed they had
completely converted to GSM by merger time, their network in NW Illinois has
gone from TDMA (and spotty at that) to pretty good GSM coverage within the
last month. (Lee, Whiteside, Carroll Counties).I see changes almost daily on
the map tool on Cingular's internal "Sales Portal" web site. These maps show
holes in the system as small as a couple hundred feet across (maybe even
smaller), though they do NOT take building construction into account, and do
not show nearly the detail from Roaming Partners' systems.

TDMA will be around for a while, as will AMPS, but anything added from here
on out will be GSM (at least for Cingular and until they switch again to
WCDMA or some such, which may not even exist as of yet). Most of the
misunderstanding is because people don't understand this; Cingular and ATTWS
didn't CHANGE from TDMA to GSM, they ADDED GSM to their TDMA towers, then
    began adding GSM sites.

this past thursday at st pat's day parade, my boss was the only one able
to use his phone during the parade, because he was the only one of us
who hadn't upgraded to a GSM phone. I guess there's one advantage to
keeping an old phone like that.

    No.

My Red Cross chapter still uses TDMA phones donated to them by ATTWS in
Disaster Services, for which ATTWS/Cingular also donates service.

    Not yet determined, AFAIK.
