My wife just passed away on Friday and our Cingular service was in her name.
I called to cancel her phone and they tell me it will cost me $150.00 to cancel..OR....
transfer the phone to someone else!
Anyone know of a workaround to get her phone cancelled at no expense?

Did you let the CSR know of your wife's status? In my experience, most
providers will cancel the service w/o termination fees with proof of death
    (newspaper obituary, death certificate, etc).

If your wife truly died Friday you have my sympathy but I got to say I find
it surprising you are dealing with this the first business day after her
death however if what you say is true I would go into a cingular store with
a copy of the death certificate and ask to speak to a manager and if they
stood by this decision to hold you to your dead wife's contract that I would
go to the news media and I am quite certain there would be a reporter
    willing to write this story.

    Re: Any way out?

FYI....this is no "lie".....her funeral was in fact yesterday
and she is being flown up to Elkhart Lake, WI to be buried next to her grandmother.
We are elderly and she handled all of the financial matters here including any
accounts. My cell phone is on the account as well as hers under HER name. I have
a week to work at getting her affairs in order since I have to return to work on the
20th. That's why I have to be doing what I'm doing to keep my mind off the past days
    events.

Like I was told....to cancel her cell phone it will cost $150.00 OR I have to find
someone to transfer her phone to and they will start new service with Cingular then.
Have your wife leave you suddenly with unpaid bills, accounts you never knew exsisted,
an unbalanced checkbook (but somehow she did manage to get the bills paid on time) and
then sit alone and just let everything go. Sorry....I have to take over responsibilty
and do what is right for her in spite of some peoples narrow mindedness.

Cingular policy is that the account can be cancelled with no fee if you
provide a death certificate. You would have to take it to a Cingular store
or fax it to customer service.

It is not uncommon for people that are dealing with a high level of grief
(whether it is death, divorce, etc.) to deal with the situation by staying
    busy.

I can't believe that none of you have experienced or witnessed someone
    staying busy after grieving before.

Your detective work on whether or not he is lying, does not contribute
anything to neither this thread nor this newsgroup.

    Re: Any way out?

There are only two things for certain, death and taxes. And, while I am
sorry for your loss, all you need to do is bring in proof of your loved one
passing, and the contract will be terminated without penalty. If not, your
next call is to the fcc and state attorney general to file a complaint.

I have 100% success in terminating a contract without penalty for death of
the contract owner. I have 50% success in terminating any contract by being
"nice" and organizing a compelling reason for it. dr

It is alleged that Elmo P. Shagnasty claimed:

; Which puts the lie to the guy's story. Go ahead, let them bill the dead
; person. What does he care.

The bill would go to the estate of the decedent, and would have to be
paid by the estate's executor. Under the circumstances, that would
    most likely be the husband.

    Re: Any way out?

Yes, you only need provide evidence of the death; and all lines under the
deceased's name will be canceled without penalty. And I am sorry about your
loss. If you need help, send me a note at [email protected], and I will
be happy to act on their behalf. You will need evidence of the deceased,
and you may also need "power of attorney" to talk to cingular about the
termination as well. With that, the phone number, & the ss#, you can get
the lines terminated without penalty. You will may have to FAX the death
notice to them. If that doesn't get it done, call me, and I'll help you
with it. I have an 800 number, for just such emergencies. Again, I'm sorry
    for your loss. dr
