I have MEdia Works Unlimited ($20/month) on my account, and email, FTP, SSH,
etc., all work fine from my laptop. The only thing not working and apparently
blocked is VPN.
At the least, email not working doesn't sound right, because many handsets
have email clients.
Check what's not working over
GPRS by making a CSD connection, if possible.
