FCC requirements state that carriers must be maintain the analog network
for the forseeable future. They don't have to use it, but they have to
maintain it. I think the sunset date is either in 2007 or 2008, so that
means analog will be around for *at least* two more years.

I'm a little skeptical, considering there are resellers who're selling new
TDMA service as I write this. It's possible that Cingular wont sell new
TDMA service has read too much between the lines.

I'd meant to say "It's possible that Cingular wont sell new
TDMA service and the service rep has read too much between the lines."

Just a possibility, but Cingular might be selling off the TDMA system
to regional or other carriers. In which case, you wouldn't be able to
use a TDMA only phone on Cingular.

What I meant was an orange SIM, to replace the existing blue SIM, which would
be GSM-only service. The problem, of course, is that orange SIMs won't work
    in handsets locked to blue.

In other words, you are being told that you will soon have to migrate from
your blue plan to an orange plan. The problem there is that a blue-locked
phone won't work with an orange SIM (unless you unlock it on your own, because
    Cingular won't do it).

You'll have to learn to live without it, or switch carriers.

More likely that the local TDMA blue network is being cut over to orange, and
migrated to GSM. That is of course inevitable.

    Again, documentation, please.

If you cannot post a scan, I invite you to scan it, send me
the scans, and I will post it on a well-connected website
for all to read at their leisure.

Too many things about your now-multiple posts have elements
of obviously incorrect information in them for the whole to
be taken seriously on its face, e.g., the most recent
reference to a Motorola v551 as a GAIT phone (which it is
not, never has been, and never shall be).

Me too--shock that is. I've got a GAIT phone (6340i) on a true GAIT
plan and have NOT received any notices. If I lost GAIT ability I'd have
to get a TDMA/AMPS phone from a rural carrier until the 30-40% of Texas
that hasn't converted does so (if ever)--two phones if Cingular totally
drops TDMA on their towers. Let's hope the OP has been singled out for
    some specific reason.

Wonder if it's possible to register the 6340i as TDMA/AMPS on one
carrier but the GSM sim on Cingular? Probably not--the download database
    from either would be wrong.

I'll see what I can do this weekend. Don't have a scanner, personally.

The V551 comment was in response to "Bob Walker" saying he had two phones on
    a GAIT-enabled account -- one of which was a V551. I didn't mean to say it
was GAIT. And, after considering it further, I realized that even if the
GAIT-enabled account was forcibly migrated to GSM, the V551 would work no
    matter what.

Other possibilities... related to another poster's comment about them
selling their TDMA to a smaller carrier. PERHAPS... Cingular is "turning
off" only the former ATTWS TDMA system and/or only in the NW region. Since
they had so many problems during the merger, they may be taking it more
slowly this time. Also, since the old ATTWS GAIT phones aren't designed for
Cingular and Cingular doesn't sell GAIT phones any more, they may have
decided to just say "no more" instead of trying to accommodate customers'
    needs.

So, perhaps the proper title for the post is that Cingular is turning off
the ATTWS TDMA system (and the related GAIT accounts). It appears that at
least ATTWS GAIT customers are screwed, but Cingular's GAIT folks have gotta
    be next...

Company apologist, are we? They can hold me to a 2-year contract even if it
stops meeting my needs, but I can't hold them to the other side of the deal?
Maybe they should have planned ahead and stopped selling new service and/or
    extending contracts.

If you obtain a SE T62u with menu functions, I think it might be
possible to register TDMA on a rural carrier and GSM on Cingular. On
some (not all) you can pick between TDMA/AMPS only and GSM only. I'm
not sure how the TDMA portion works, but I know if you put someone
else's SIM in it, you can't make TDMA calls.

I suppose they could try to sell the tdma equipment, but who would buy
it? Did they make tdma phones that were not also amps?

Probably not any national carriers, but some regional carriers might
take it up if it was the best (or only) service currently available in
    that (probably rural) area.

Since it is my understanding that the manufacturers are not or soon
will not be making any more replacement tdma parts, and they are not
making any tdma phones, then no body would want to buy old, used tdma
    network equipment.
