How reliable is the GPRS/EDGE Network?.

How reliable is the GPRS/EDGE Network?.After several weeks of being able to
reliably connect at reasonable speeds the last 24 hours has resulted in
either no connection (Connection Manager can't find a data network) or a
near zero connection speeds when it does connect. I don't imagine Cingular
would happen to have a network status webpage , right?

If you install Sony Ericsson's Wireless Manager, it displays current
download speed. I have both Sony Ericsson's Wireless Manager and
Cingular's Communication Manager installed on my laptop. Below is the

I was not concerned with download speed, as I said when it works the speed
is
adequate....my question was around why the speed has been zeor for the last
48hrs
here......is the network reliable or does it have periods of extended down
time ?

I'm sorry, I was replying to the last part of Lars' post.

Regarding your question, you may need to reboot your laptop. When I
used Cingular Connection Manager, I sometimes had situations simular to
yours, and had to reboot to be able to reconnect. Cingular Connection
Manager software is buggy IMHO. The Sony Ericsson Wireless Manager has
a reset card on shutdown feature, that generally removes the need to
reboot when you run into a problem. You can download Sony Ericsson's

Good, but not great -- it generally works well, but there are issues from time
to time.

We recently had a few days of similar problems here in Northern California.

Right. But you can call Customer Service and find out if there is a problem
in your area (or otherwise report it).

Actually up to about 150 Kbps, on Cingular at least.

Really? How did you measure that? I've never seen more than about 150 Kbps
with an EGPRS Class 10 device on Cingular.

Windows connect shows the port speed, not the data throughout speed. However,
Windows will report network throughput (in different ways depending on
version).

Possibly we share some portion of the same network....I'm a few hundred
miles north
of you....

Let's hope the reason for the slowdowns was for "system upgrades"

huh... Now that's it's being mentioned, we were having problems in the
NY/NJ area as well. My RAZR would boot up with a GPRS symbol once it
regsitered wiht the network, but after a while the symbol would
disappear and all GPRS connections would fail. Usually rebooting the
phone would restore the connection, for while until it dropped again,
requiring anohter reboot.

It happened all last week, but so far this week, I haven't noticed any
similar issues anymore.

I find that my EDGE card for PC performance has really deteriorated. To
be totally useless. Clearly false and misleading advertising and fails
the test of suitability for intended purpose. I am a former AT&T
wireless user. The story I get is that they are cutting down service
for former AT&T customers so that we have to open a new account with
Cingular, buy new equipment and sign a new contract. I find Verizon has
far superior service in the mid-Atlantic area including a 1 Gbit
wideband service in DC and NY. So, if I have to change carriers, then
it looks better to go to the better carrier.
