The message waiting indicator indicator is controlled by a
specially-formatted SMS that the phone must interpret rather then send to
the user as a message. This occurs when the voice mail is left (turn the
MWI on) and again when the voice mail is retrieved (turn the MWI off).
Certain unlocked Motorola phones (the V635 in particular) may not interpret
these SMS codes correctly, and instead display text messages that contain
garbage. This affects Cingular and, more recently, T-Mobile USA; who are in
the process of converting from text-message to MWI notification of new
voice mail. There is a seem edit that often fixes this, but the feature bits
associated with that also result in disabling manual network selection.
Some V635 owners have reported that attempted fixes result in the phone
rebooting when voice mail comes in.
