Is there a way to enter a carriage return in a text message so that the next
character begins on a new line?

I don't know what phone you are using but text messages allow so many
characters on a line, so if you keep adding spaces until the cursor jumps
to the next line, that should do it.

    two problems with this solution.
    a) it takes forever to keep hitting spaces
    b) each space is one less character I type - max 160
    thanks any way

My Nokia 6340i includes a hard carriage return (icon is the bent arrow
like on the enter key of a keyboard) as one of the symbols you can
insert by pressing * when entering the message body. I just tested it
and it works, both to a sms number and to an email address. First time
I've ever used it in all the hundreds of sms messages I've sent over the
    years :-)

I just tried it on my Moto V3. If I press the * quickly it adds a space and
if I hold it down it goes to the next line immediately.

    Thanks.

Holding down the asterisk "*" key also works on the V551.
