I recently went from being a former ATTWS subscriber with a Moto
V551(ATTWS Sim) to a Cingular subscriber with a new Nokia 6230(Cingular
64K Sim). Prior to the switch, I was ready to give up on both Cingular
and Motorola. Reception was horrible, dropped calls were regular, and I
could barely hear callers. New Cingular service with my Nokia has been
flawless. The performance difference between the Moto and Nokia is like
night vs. day. I often find myself having to adjust the earpiece volume
down on the Nokia. Callers are impressed by the voice quality as well.
Signal strength is better than any phone I have ever used. So I ask,
"what gives?" Is Cingular giving former ATTWS subpar service to force
    early migration? Neal

    Re: Dramatic difference

It's the phone, not the service provider. You went from a phone with
one of the worst RF receptions made to one of the best. We went
    from ATT with a T616 and X426 to Cingular with a 551 and 6230
because both phones were useless at our new home.

My wife's new 551 was still absolutely useless while my new 6230
worked without issue. We replaced her 551 with a RAZR and
now she's in business. (We also replaced my 6230 with a 6620
and it's just as good if not better).

Well yeah, he upgraded from a motorola something to a nokia something. A
"dramatic difference" for the better is predictable when you do something
    smart like that. -Dave

Did you get the Nokia 6230 through cingular? I hate the cingular
current phone selection, but because of my business relationship I get
35% of hardware so I hate to buy the phone elsewhere. I was told they
do not have the 6230 anymore, and havent for some time, they told me
they have had so many problems with that phone and had to send so many
    back that they pulled it.

Yes, I got it through Cingular. I ordered it through my foundation
business account. I have seen 6230's in Cingular stores as recently as
one month ago, so I'm surprised you are having trouble finding one. Not
one problem with the phone so far...Neal

They supposedly pulled them for a while to update the phone/firmware
but they should be back in stock. I had no problems with mine but
only used it for 2 weeks before I replaced it with a 6620 (I didn't
like that the 6230 media player didnt have the ability to FF/REW).

How do you check your phone for the latest firmware?

I follow howardforums.com to keep up with what's new
in firmware and such. To check the version on the newer
    nokias, you type *#0000#

The V551 actually has good RF performance. Big differences are usually the
result of network programming -- you can't meaningfully compare a phone on
"blue" (old ATTWS network) to a different phone on "orange" (old Cingular
    network).

But I can compare the 551, the 6230b, the RAZR and the 6620 all of which we
had on the orange side. I'm telling you John, the 551 was completely
    useless. We
could not make a single outgoing call. It managed to receive a couple from
    our
landline if you stood in the kitchen, but those were dropped within 30
    seconds.
People may rate it well online compared to the others, but who knows how
    many
people who rated it needed to use it in fringe areas.

in the kitchen, but they were typically dropped within

Then your V551 was probably either misprogrammed or defective. I've tested
the V551 head-to-head against good phones like the Sony Ericsson Z600 using
the same SIM on the same network, and it performs very well.

My tests included fringe areas with very weak signals.
